L.C. Bird 36, Monacan 6

In a game that totaled 11 turnovers on a rain soaked field at Monacan last Thursday, it was the Skyhawks who emerged victorious in a battle of 5-0 teams, winning 36-6.

L.C. Bird (6-0) took advantage of many of the opportunities that were given. scoring all of their touchdowns on drives that started in Monacan (5-1) territory. Of the six Chiefs turnovers, L.C. Bird capitalized on four of them. Monacan’s T.J. Jones returned a fumble 39 yards for a touchdown to account for the Chiefs’ only score of the game.

The Skyhawks took a 15-0 lead into halftime on the strength of two touchdown passes from Jalen Elliott, one to Kier Townsend and the other to Kumonde Hines. The second half brought touchdowns two touchdowns from J.B. Wright, who finished with a hard-earned 171 yards and a defensive touchdown Muftao Oledejo, who fell on a fumble in the end zone.

Rayshard Ashby finished the game with 12 tackles, 2 for a loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Fellow linebacker Isaiah Moore intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble.

Defense has been the strength of L.C. Bird this season as through six games, opposing offenses are averaging 53 total yards of offense per contest. The first team defense hasn’t been scored on all season. The lone touchdown given up by the defense came late in the fourth quarter against Thomas Dale in week one.

The Skyhawks have this week off. Next up for L.C. Bird on October 16 is a contest at Cosby. Kick-off is 7:30pm.

Meadowbrook 41, Colonial Heights 0

For the second straight week, the Monarchs have dealt their opponent a decisive defeat. This time, Colonial Heights (2-3) was beaten 41-0.

Senior running back Jace Miller had his finest game of the year thus far, rushing for 177 yards and two scores. A relatively balanced offensive effort included Jordyn Hunter adding 40 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, and Matthew Hodges gained 120 total yards (7-17) passing and scored a TD. De’Ron Lee finished with 54 rushing yards. Wideout Bajon McCray caught three passes for 68 yards.

Defensively, Darryl White led the Monarchs with 13 tackles. Hodges added 10 tackles, Mike Crewe had six tackles.

Darien Canada led Colonial Heights with 92 rushing yards.

Meadowbrook, (2-3) winners of two straight has a tough opponent on the schedule this week as they welcome Hopewell to their home turf. Kick-off is at 7pm.

Both Thomas Dale at Prince George and Matoaca at Dinwiddie were postponed due to weather and were played on Monday, October 5. Results were published on twitter @VNewsSports.
