Sam Gunther breaks ODAC record

guntherMatoaca alum Sam Gunther has already had an excellent career running at Bridgewater College, but for his senior year, he naturally, wanted to go out with a bang. Mission accomplished. This past weekend, Gunther broke his own ODAC and Bridgewater record with a time of 1:50.58 in the 800m run.

The record breaking performance occurred at the Wolfpack Last Chance meet at North Carolina state, while Gunther, (affectionately called “Gunna” here at home) placed fourth in the race out of 17 runners, including many Division I athletes.

“He’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever coached,” said coach Charles Bailey. “Sam’s determination and hard work has paid off.”

The performance qualified Gunther for the NCAA D3 Championships for the second straight year. He’ll look to improve on his 17th place finish last year in the event. His time currently ranks fourth in the national among all D3 runners in the 800m.
