Dogpound Memorial

CHESTER, Va – Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound.  This is Sunday, and hopefully I will make it under the wire to get this in the Memorial Day issue.  Wow!  End of May is just around the corner.  Anyway, please do take time out from your holiday activities to honor those who have died to protect not only our freedom but the freedom of millions around the world [Note: Veterans Day is to honor all who have proudly served]. Originally this was called “Decoration Day,” a day to place flowers on the graves of those who have died in military service.  This day was originally recognized on May 30, but was moved to the last Monday in May by Congress in 1971 to make this holiday and several others a full three day week-end holiday.  On this three-day weekend, I am going to attend the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 race. I am not a big fan of car races, but I do enjoy participating and enjoying the atmosphere at one of the largest, if not the largest, sporting event in the world.  They have over 250,000 permanent seats, and most of the time I would say they are at least 90 percent plus filled, and this does not count the 1,000’s that are literally parked inside the two-mile race track.  There have been estimates as high as 400,000 in attendance, and with this being a special 100th event, I can only image that they will come close to that number or higher.  That is a huge mass of bodies.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
“Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.”  Mark Twain

EVER DO THIS?
Whenever I choose to go down the stairs next to a crowded escalator, I feel the need to move faster than the escalator to prove to the people on board that I made the better decision. [HA! HA! Beat you to the bottom!]

KIDS
Kids are born with their own personalities. I was watching little kids on a carousel. Some kids were jumping on the horses, some kids were afraid of the horses, and some kids were betting on the horses.

WOMEN?

  • Women want love to be a novel, men a short story.
  • Any woman’s guess is much more accurate than a man’s certainty.
  • A tranquil woman can go on sewing longer than an angry man can go on fuming.
  • Women as they grow older rely more on cosmetics; men as they grow older rely more on humor.

That is all I have for today.  The sun has finally come out and I have grass to mow before it rains again.  As always be good, do good, play safe, and please remember all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
