Father’s Day and Racing

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Before I forget, happy Father’s Day to all of you wonderful dads, who in my opinion, really do not get the credit they deserve.
You work hard every day; day in and day out to support your family without complaining. The pack tips its hat to you. And a tip of hat to me for getting this column out ahead of the actual holiday. [Yee-aw!]

Anyway, I had the opportunity to attend the 100th running of the Indy 500; it was sold out with easily over 300,000 in attendance. The Indy 500 draws a large crowd anyway but that was one mass of humanity. For example, in the past we have always caught the shuttle bus into the event, which is much easier than fighting the traffic, and we might stand in line less than 10 minutes to catch the 20 minute-ride to the race track.

This year, we arrived at the same time..at the same parking lot, and we had to wait over 2 hours to get on a bus. It was even worse coming back because there were no well, established lines to get on the bus, so the lines disappeared into one huddled mass of humanity. A mass that has been out in the sun for over four hours, and many for the most part have drunk their fill of alcohol beverages. As the lines merged beyond recognition, some started to get agitated, and the police had to step in to keep things calm. We finally gave up and went back to the speedway to grab some frozen lemon ice and wait in the shade for another two hours plus, before the lines became manageable. Even then, we got in a bus where they crammed every single body they could in the seats and in the aisle. There was no way that the bus’s air conditioning could begin to keep up, and I tell you, it was one hot and smelly ride back to the car. Next time I am bringing a can of air freshener… just in case!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

What Is A Dad?

A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail…

– Unknown

That is all I have for today. As always be good, do good, and remember to make sure you spend some time with your dad on Father’s Day [He deserves it].
