Man, woman charged following officer-involved shooting

A man and a woman were charged with multiple offenses following an officer-involved shooting on May 31.

At about 11 p.m., police were conducting a foot patrol at the Suburban Motel, 2401 W. Hundred Road. When police entered the motel, they saw a man and a woman.

When the man and woman saw officers, the woman quickly left the area. Officers followed the woman and saw her entering a vehicle. As police approached to make contact with her, she attempted to leave in the vehicle, nearly striking the officers, a press release states.

Officers discharged their firearms, striking the woman driver. The officers involved in the shooting immediately provided first aid to the woman and continued to render aid until rescue personnel arrived. The woman, identified as Emily C. Adkins, 28, was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

During their investigation, police located and searched a room at the motel that Adkins and the man in the hallway, identified as Derrick L. Bynum, 46, were sharing.

The officers found a firearm and what appeared to be controlled substances in the room, the release states.

Adkins has been charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; possession of a schedule I, II controlled substance; possession with intent to distribute a schedule I, II controlled substance; and possession of a firearm while in possession of a schedule I, II controlled substance.

Bynum was arrested and charged with possession of a schedule I, II controlled substance; distribution of a schedule I, II controlled substance; conspiracy to distribute a schedule I, II controlled substance; possession with intent to distribute a schedule I, II controlled substance; possession with intent to distribute a schedule I, II controlled substance – conspiracy; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; possession of a firearm while in possession of a schedule I, II controlled substance; and maintaining a common nuisance.

Both are being held without bond in Riverside Regional Jail.
