To the Editor: In regard to the Bikeways and Trails chapter [in the Comprehensive Plan], I have found there is great support for a more walkable and bikeable Chesterfield County. Everyday I see people trying to cross Ironbridge Road without crosswalks or sidewalks. Our county has not developed well for the many forms of transportation people already use, and it is time to put in place a plan for the infrastructure we need for years to come. The Bikeways and Trails chapter will provide guidance for coordination among departments with new development and when older areas are fixed. Sometimes I…

To the Editor I grew up in Chesterfield, I have seen change throughout the years: Larger highways, stoplights, new subdivisions and many new restaurants. As I drive throughout Virginia for work I see much of the same as small towns connect by concrete, Chick-fil-A and Walmart.  Many times I sit down to eat at the new restaurants in some small town in Virginia.  But it’s not the same. No one stops me to ask about the family, to chat about friends, to share their troubles. For me it’s the familiar faces that make Chesterfield home. Many years ago John Erbach came to…

To the Editor: The August editorial titled Great Idea, Poor Execution and subsequent Comments are relevant to the important upcoming Board of Supervisors and Planning Department meeting October 20 at 6 p.m. about the Comprehensive Plan – Bikeways and Trails. The plan has been studied and reworked several times over too many years. Now is the time for Chesterfield County, with the leadership of the Board of Supervisors, to approve the plan and execute it in the coming years to promote a healthy and vibrant community that attracts millennials and business. Is the Comprehensive Plan perfect? No. Will there be…

To the Editor: The “center” (turning lane) of Route 10/West Hundred Road has been narrowed quite a bit, as well as the other four traffic lanes to make room for two bicycles lanes. To make room for bicycles, they should have bought up more right-of-way. Driving west, I make a left turn on to Petersburg Street. I can just barely get my car into this turning lane. With real heavy traffic, cars and trucks are passing me in both west and east lanes, barely missing me by inches. There I sit, in “dead water” with “white knuckles,” waiting to be…

To the Editor: Now that school is back in session full swing, and everyone is busy trying to get settled into a routine. We want to take some time from the hustle and bustle to give thanks. We are a group called Guardians, who volunteer in a lot of the struggling communities in and around Chester. We help those who don’t have the resources to help themselves. This summer we were blessed to participate in a pilot feeding program for the children in Ettrick as well as the communities of Bermuda Estates, Par 3, Harbour East, and the Chester Masonettes.…

To the Editor: While government agencies seek new ways to boost the economy and create jobs, one industry is just waiting for government support in order to invest billions of private dollars into the economy. I’m talking about the energy industry – the one that has led the way in job creation and investment since the recent Great Recession. America’s energy companies are waiting on pipeline approvals so they can more safely carry oil and natural gas to processing centers. Building those pipelines will create tens of thousands of jobs. Oil companies are waiting for the federal government to lift…

When I was small, and still today, I had a hero, someone that would help me be strong, that would give me guidance, and teach me about courage, friendship, brotherhood – my father. We all have heroes. We find them in comic books, literature we read, maturing, we find them as sports figures, and as adults, they turn from action figures, to figures of action. We all know the heroes of September 11. Not by name, not by who they were, but by their courage, their bravery and their willingness to help by overcoming their fears. Yet, there was still one,…

To the Editor: With tax reform back on the front burner in Washington, I am encouraged that we can finally go forward in a bipartisan way toward a federal tax code that is simpler, fairer and more growth-oriented. This is a pressing need for our nation. We won’t achieve these goals, however, by singling out the domestic energy industry for punitive tax increases. The oil and gas industry has been in the cross-hairs of Congress for years. Several budget proposals that have been offered would be destructive to our long term energy security and put the brakes on new investment…

To the Editor: Thanks for the information regarding the Dave Brat town hall meeting at the Fire Station. I do not understand why the Patriots set this up, since Chester residents do not get to vote for Brat, being within Randy Forbes’ fourth Congressional district. But thanks for the information. Thanks also for sharing your reasonable concerns regarding the safety of the new bike lane through Chester. I feel as if we are being offered the opportunity to claim that strip of roadway for bikes by throwing our bodies in front of cars. No thank you, Chesterfield government; I value…

To the Editor: I got a call from my sister last Wednesday who was at Sunset Memorial Park with a friend. She went to my husband’s grave and his bronze vase plus flowers were gone. I called the office and told the man what happened. He got the info and would contact police to make a report and said someone would call me from the office. I got a call about an hour later and was told to replace the vase would cost $300 to $400, but I could get it for $193. This person who stole the vase has…
