It is Teacher Appreciation Week, and as usual I waited until the last minute to put anything together for these wonderful people. I have desperately tried for years to make cute, creative, Pinterest inspired gifts for the teachers in our life, and it stresses me out every time. As of last year, I gave up. I will buy a gift card and give you some candy, and have my children write a note about why they love you so much. That is truly about all I can handle. I try to show my appreciation through-out the year, by teaching my…

This past weekend was beautiful; the azaleas are in full bloom (those that weren’t maimed by the frost), the buttercups are sprouting up everywhere, and pollen is gently falling like late yellow snow. It’s both wonderful and awful at the same time (my eyes have never been so itchy). While we play, and play, and play some more, we enjoy being out in the perfect weather. The sky so blue it makes your heart give a little squeeze, the flowers so vibrant, and the birds singing a chorus just for us. It makes you drunk on contentment. My darling girl…

This column is quickly approaching its eight anniversary with the Village News. I know I cannot believe it either. When I first began writing this column, it focused on my then two- year-old son. The trials and tribulations of moving him out of our bedroom, and upstairs (not to mention my neurosis about him moving into his own room) was clearly documented in the pages of the VN. His love of Transformers, the movie Cars (and its soundtrack), melt downs in the Chester branch of the public library, starting preschool, and becoming a big brother. You all have been around…

Wanderlust: a strong desire to travel. I have been filled with wanderlust for the last few weeks. The dawn of spring has heightened this feeling. I truly feel my soul rejuvenating as the sun gets warmer, the birds get louder, and the world begins to explode with an array of color. The earth is waking up, and with it so am I. Unfortunately, sweet Chester has begun to assault my senses, and not in a positive way. Just getting to Kroger is a feat in itself these days. Route10 is jam packed with people coming and going, and I am…

Hallelujah, March is finally here! As per most years, my winter doldrums vanish the instant the skies turn that Carolina blue and the sun starts to warm my skin. I love to hear the birds chirping, and my children playing outside. My windows are wide open and so is my heart this time of year. The blooms from the daffodils float in the breeze and the soft whisper of warmer days to come brush your skin. I absolutely can get drunk on spring. March is the light at the end of my dark, dreary, winter tunnel. I adore this month.…

I just cannot stand how fast my children are growing up. It is truly a desperate time in my house, I am losing it. Instead of relishing in each new growth spurt, every new activity, milestones being reached; I am instead screaming in my head, “No, no, wait!” It is excruciating watching them grow up and away from me. I know, believe me, I know that I sound like a lunatic. Of course I love when they try something new and adventurous, when they go above and beyond my expectations of them, when they are daring and strong. But (there’s…

My precious flower just celebrated her sixth birthday, it is truly hard to believe. I feel like time is marching on so quickly, and my darling girl is growing up too fast. For her birthday this year, she requested horseback riding lessons; of course we started this past Saturday. My girl is the happiest person I know, and she generates warmth and love. She makes everyone she is around feel special, and I adore that about her. Because of this, she usually just has to ask sweetly, and it is done – thus the horseback riding lessons. I was nervous…

If you are reading this, then you survived Snowmageddon 2016. We all anxiously awaited that first snow flake; Tim Bullis had already made the hearts and souls of all the children and teachers happy by calling school on Friday, and the anticipation for a huge snow storm was building. My little family woke up Friday morning to gray skies and cold breezes. We lounged for a bit, enjoyed a leisurely home cooked breakfast and watched as the snow began to fall. Did I mention that Daddy was out scurrying around like a mad man while the rest of us lazy…

While we haven’t quite experienced the bitter cold of winters past, twilight still appears much too soon, the trees are barren, and the world lacks color. Cardinals dot the branches of my naked trees and give me little bursts of joy, but alas, winter is still here. We may be having 70-degree days, my windows may be flung wide open in the dead of January, but try as I might; the doldrums have appeared. I get this way every winter, and truly wish that I could hibernate. Those that know me well probably wish that I would. I become melancholic,…

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a boy was born. He grew up to become the most wonderful husband and father a woman could ask for, and as I write this we are celebrating his birthday. My husband’s birthday is today, and one of the greatest gifts this devout Star Wars fan could get is arriving at the end of the week, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will be released in theaters on Friday and he could not be more excited. Of course he purchased four tickets a month ago. We are already scheduled…
