I heard a grandmother telling a story the other day about her granddaughter. She had been in another room, and when she came in the room where adults were, she had a red mark on her nose. When she was asked what happened to her nose, she said something to the effect of “I was checking the fireplace.” In other words, she had put her nose against a hot fireplace. Fortunately, she only received a minor, first-degree burn. This story prompts me to ask the question, how do we keep our little ones safe? This article will only skim the surface…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. In the last article, I was telling you about my front door painting experience. One thing about painting…at least for me…is that I get a lot of paint on other things that I am not supposed to get paint on, and of course, that includes me. Because of my tendencies, I have some paint clothes I keep just for this occasion. However, I had some trouble locating my paint threads, since I had a reorganization of my closets a few months ago, and the box they were supposed to…

T hanksgiving is a time when families gather around a table full of turkey, dressing, and all the fixings. Unless you buy a fully prepared meal, someone is going to get to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. In other words, a lot of cooking normally takes place, during this time of the year. The number one cause of residential fires in America is cooking-related fires. Many of these cooking-related incidents are probably due to unattended cooking. Whatever the case, more time in the kitchen increases the probability of an unwanted kitchen fire. What will you do before…

Hello, and welcome back to the thankful world of the Dogpound. As you are awareI have been writing furiously to get ahead of my Master’s demands for the month of November. I am in crunch time, since every week in November I have something going on to make it a short week…one week I am going to Ohio to watch my Buckeyes play…another weekend I am attending my oldest daughter’s wedding then, it is Thanksgiving weekend where I am going to my sister’s for a few days. Then depending how things go, I may have to go to court because…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful holiday world of the Dogpound. I hope everyone in the pack had a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving; spending it with all of your loved ones and eating more food that you should at any one meal setting. As for me, in a few days I will be hitting the road to spend Thanksgiving with my sister and her family in Ohio. I cannot remember the last time we were all able to get together for this particular holiday, so I am really looking forward to this visit. Actually, I just got back from…

For all the years that I have been writing this column, my primary task has been to emphasize fire safety. Considering the mass shooting at First Baptist Church, Sutherland Springs Texas, I am going to attempt to talk about both. I am thankful for all police officers, but they cannot be everywhere at the instance that they need to be there. It is as important to have a security plan as it is to have a fire escape plan. The issue is to ensure that you are thinking of both, as you develop a comprehensive plan, whether in your home,…

It was a dark and spooky night; the leaves were tumbling down the streets, following in the footsteps of all the children dancing through the night. It was Halloween, and the ghosts, goblins, and witches were out to get yummy treats. Tall and short, happy and scary, the children delighted in going door to door and politely asking “trick or treat” to each person who answered the door. I don’t think that I will ever tire of Halloween; it’s a magical night where anything is possible. We have been through the many stages of parenthood so far, and Halloween is…

To the Editor There was a revolution prior to ours in 1776. It was the one that put King William and Queen Mary on the throne of England and forced John II to flee England. It was during this revolution that the ember was created one that was transferred here to America and started the fire of liberty. In this revolution, there were three factions and three issues. But it was one faction and one issue that made up that ember. One group stood up against the belief of the divine right of kings to rule. John Locke, as a…

Though it was fifteen years ago, I remember the second Saturday of the 2002 black powder season like it was yesterday. It was a beautiful, crisp morning. I got to my stand just before first light, and I had great expectations for that morning. It was a requirement of our hunt club that you had to be in an elevated stand or an elevated position to black powder hunt. My stand for that morning was a wooden stand that rose above a creek in what was known as Upper Malvern. I saw the seat on the ground, but did not…

Hello, and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Cold weather is starting to creep up on us, and it is time to prepare for what is coming down the pike. Most of the outside work is done…I washed down the outside of the house…did all of the windows inside and out…painted my door…sprayed home-guard all around the house for bugs..leaving only the final flower bed maintenance, but that needs to be done when it gets a lot colder. Inside, I just needed to fire up the propane fireplaces. The one downstairs started right up…but the one upstairs…
