Single-family and multi-family dwelling fires occur every day somewhere in our nation. Sadly, three firefighters have lost their lives in Delaware and New York City. The point of firefighters losing their lives indicates the danger of the job and the fact that something went catastrophically wrong. The question would you be prepared, if a fire were to occur in your home? Let’s go through a checklist and see. Have you done a fire safety inspection in your home recently? The kitchen would be the place to start. More fires start in the kitchen than any other place in your home.…

To the Editor: Mae West once said, “When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I’ve never tried before.” This is the situation we have with the upcoming election. The bottom line is we know what Hillary Clinton is. We have had to deal with her bad ideas, lack of judgment and possible criminal activity for 20-plus years. Donald Trump has his issues. But he is somewhat an unknown entity, I say give him a chance. We know what we get with Clinton. Vote for The Donald! Jim Daniels Editor’s Note: The opinions of the Editor’s…

By M.A. Fuller, Reiki Practitioner & Stress Management Coach How to mark your borders to be your best self. I nearly cried the day my two-and-a-half year old handed me my cell phone and said, “Here mama, boss.” While obviously my boss is not a cell phone, he wasn’t too far off. I had allowed my work to dominate my home life by being available via phone, e-mail, and text 100 percent of the time. Thinking it was clever multitasking; I’d aimlessly chip away at the hundreds of e-mails left in my inbox after 5 p.m. while at the same…

Hello and welcome back to the party time in the Dogpound. That is right…I am celebrating another day of living…another year and another birthday. I am not going to tell you my age… heaven forbid….but I do keep telling everyone that I am 39 and holding and holding..and holding. Unfortunately, these days it is getting harder and harder to hold on. I know and agree with the saying that “age is just a number,” but somehow, over time, that number just keeps creeping up [like my waist line!]. I am thankful to the good Lord that I am able get around…

Fall officially arrived last week, and so marks the beginning of many people’s favorite season. Fall is the best time for aerating and seeding cool season grass lawns and planting new trees and shrubs. It is also the time when many of us think about fall decorating, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Although each has a different meaning, the one common item is pumpkins. “Pumpkin” originated from the Greek word “pepon” which is “large melon.” Pumpkins are native to Central and North America and are members of the Cucurbita family. The Cucurbita family includes watermelons, squash, and cucumbers as well. Because pumpkins…

We have witnessed the worst of America over the last few days. Violence, rioting, and looting has been occurring in Charlotte, N.C. This has been an ongoing trend across our great nation. The question is, why? The trigger to every one of these incidents has involved police officers and the death of, in many cases, an African American male. Whether it is an officer-involved shooting or attempting to transport a prisoner, all have led to mayhem on our city streets. Racism is a problem in our nation. Admitting that it exists is the beginning step in resolving it. Some believe…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. As most of you are aware, at some point time at work, or at a social event you will be approached by parent who shoves a pamphlet toward you peddling overpriced candy, cookies, or whatever to support their child’s school activities. Many times this is a tit-for-tat scheme, since you have at one time or another done same thing to them for your kid…so you are kind of obligated to return the favor. This round-robin event should end when your kids grow up, but unfortunately that is seldom the…

The dog days of summer seem to be a figment of the imagination as we begin our third week back to school. Splashing, running, and soaking up the sun are things of the distant past. No more Popsicles and bare feet, they have now been traded in for brand new tennis shoes, and sandwiches packed lovingly into lunchboxes. School is back in full force, and we have finally adjusted to our routine this year. I’m happy to report that my new fifth- and first-graders are adapting very well to their new grade levels. Each coming home excited each day as…

A s we watch the news from the New York and New Jersey bombings as well as the stabbings in Minnesota, I have just returned from Nairobi, Kenya. Traveling internationally causes you to see many of the changes that have occurred due to terrorism, whether in airports or shopping centers. One problem that I see is that, even though we have become more vigilant to stop these people, there are still many things yet to be done. We have heard many times that while law enforcement must get it right over and over, a terrorist only has to get it…
