It is 6:27 a.m., and I have just returned from dropping off our guest evangelist at the Richmond International Airport, for his journey back to Texas. He came to us from a place called Spanish Fort, which is located along the Red River, on the Texas/Oklahoma border. You may say, how did we find someone there to come and lead our revival services? The answer lies in a Southern Baptist seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has, for years, sent out students and faculty, across America, to preach revival, through a movement known as “Revive This Nation.”…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. My Internet service is down so it is like panic city around here. Oh my! What do I do with my time now? How do I survive?? So I decided I would just have to sit down and write my weekly Dogpound article. Tough life! LOL What did we do before 24/7 access to communications? You have to realize..not giving away my age…that in my days we had three channels and they went off at midnight. So needless to say the world has changed a lot since then. That…

To the Editor: There once was a flea who lived in a jar. The jar had a lid on it. Every day the flea would jump and he would hit his poor little head on the lid. One day the lid was removed and as the story goes, the flea only jumped to where the lid used to be. The flea’s habits never changed and it never left the jar even though its constraints were removed. Chester has a new front door. State Route 10 or West Hundred Road used to be a barrier for people who wanted to walk…

It almost seems impossible to not write about the flu each year once flu season starts. This is especially true because of the sudden and drastic rise in cases in our area over the last few weeks. The state of Virginia is currently seeing widespread influenza-like illness (ILI) activity. The CDC currently indicates we are in the moderate to high activity range, as are states that border us including North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Information regarding national and regional flu activity is available to the public at: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/index.htm#ILIMap. Last year and the year prior, the peak for the flu season…

As I drive around our area, I notice two familiar scenes: 1) Fresh mulch on commercial property landscape beds. 2) Innocent crepe myrtle trees being hacked. It must be spring. A familiar scenario that many gardeners encounter now that the thermometer is increasing is impulse buying. We have all done it. Some plants at the garden center are so beautiful they seem to jump onto our cart without assistance. Then it happens….we get home only to discover that perfect place is not so perfect. You can avoid this predicament by shopping at a local, full service garden center. The staff…

I had just driven by Station 1 and saw the TSO parked on the ramp and Engine 1 sitting in quarters. As I sat in the line at the Rite Aid, I heard the TSO and Engine 1 head out on a call. They had to have gone north, south or east, since they did not pass behind me. As I left the drug store, I looked east and saw black smoke in the sky, in a place where it should not have been, a chief indicator that they were headed to a working fire. For those who are thinking…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Well, the good news is that I have completed my tax forms…well…my CPA did them…I have long since gave up trying to do what they call… “any sixth-grader can master.” Really? Not only are they done, I have received both my refunds…state and federal. So now the inflow starts to become the outflow. Poor Betsy… my CRV… now at the grand old age of 220,000 miles and counting… is not doing very well. I had to take her back to the Honda dealership to get the passenger air bag…

To the Editor: What would you do if a close relative died, leaving two pet cats and you were allergic to them? What if you lost your job, had your home foreclosed and had to move somewhere you couldn’t take your family’s pet cat? What if a neighbor moved, abandoning several cats who then appeared on your doorstep, hungry and cold? What would you do? You should be able to call Animal Control and, at the very least, be referred to some of the local private shelters or other organizations who might be able to help. No, Chesterfield Animal Control’s…

Hallelujah, March is finally here! As per most years, my winter doldrums vanish the instant the skies turn that Carolina blue and the sun starts to warm my skin. I love to hear the birds chirping, and my children playing outside. My windows are wide open and so is my heart this time of year. The blooms from the daffodils float in the breeze and the soft whisper of warmer days to come brush your skin. I absolutely can get drunk on spring. March is the light at the end of my dark, dreary, winter tunnel. I adore this month.…

Though Chesterfield Fire & EMS predates 1950, the first salaried Fire Marshal was hired in 1966. In 1969, the first salaried firefighters were hired and it was at this time that Robert L. Eanes went from being the Fire Marshal to Chief of the Department. Chief Eanes would lead the organization until 1996. Chesterfield would go from being an all-volunteer department to a combination department. Chesterfield Fire Dept. grew to be a great organization, with great firefighters and state of the art equipment. I appreciate Chief Eanes, since he was the one that gave me a job in 1985. Serving…
