Haley asks for audit for alleged bullying of teachers The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors had plenty of questions for school superintendent Merv Daugherty on July 22 after the school board voted 4-1 for a virtual reopening of schools on Sept. 8 and 9. Daugherty noted that the county’s health officer, Alexander Samuel, projected that a spike in coronavirus cases will occur in September. Daugherty said he didn’t want to reopen schools and then have to close them and go to 100-percent virtual learning. During his presentation to the school board on July 20, deputy superintendent Thomas Taylor said some $15…

By a vote of 4-1 with Jim Ingle dissenting, the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors approved a rezoning for the Courthouse Landing mixed-use project last week. The June 24 meeting was the first one in months since the COVID-19 virus hit that allowed residents to speak in person during public comment. A number availed themselves of the opportunity. “This is an extremely solid project,” Dale District resident David Harris said. “It could fund schools and teacher raises” and add restaurants. “We need more jobs and tax money. We [have to] keep our teachers from leaving.” Mike Uzel said that, although…

Chesterfield County had 32 deaths related to the coronavirus as of May 27. County supervisors heard that and more information from Chesterfield’s health district director, Dr. Alexander Samuel, during their May 27 meeting. Samuel noted that the county’s positivity testing rate for COVID-19 was at 17.5 percent, which was down from the peak of about 28 percent in mid-April. However, it was an increase from 11.8 percent three weeks previous.  Samuel added that more than 11,000 coronavirus tests had been administered to county residents, the fourth-highest total in the state.  Clover Hill supervisor Chris Winslow asked Samuel if he thought…

By Caleb M. Soptelean A planned increase in utility rates went down the drain last week as a result of the impact of the coronavirus. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to keep utility fees the same in Fiscal Year 2021, which starts July 1. They also unanimously approved a revised budget of $723.6 million, which is almost $50 million less than the original proposal. “Kudos to [deputy county administrator Matt Harris] and the entire budget team,” board chairwoman Leslie Haley said during the April 21 virtual meeting. “They started over from almost square one.” She also noted…

Chesterfield County supervisors held a restricted-access meeting March 25 that included a public hearing on the proposed Fiscal Year 2020-21 budget. Only two persons spoke during public comment at the meeting, likely due to the restrictions imposed because of fallout from the coronavirus. Among the items approved as part of the consent agenda was hiring Jessica Robison at the new Emergency Management Coordinator. She had been in place on an interim basis from March 7. The supervisors also approved a resolution recognizing county planner Darla Orr for 23 years of service. A lease for pad site No. 4 at the…

However, the company can earn an additional $216,280 to produce an in-house charrette, a public charrette and upgrades to the online ordinance tool. A charrette is a collaborative planning and design session. According to the staff report, much of the county’s current zoning ordinance is from 1997 and…

The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors approved an annual increase in the curbside recycling fee during their Feb. 19 meeting. The action came as part of the consent agenda and will result in an annual fee of $40. It will go into effect June 5. The old rate was $25 a year. Clay Bowles, the county’s director of general services, said that the $15 annual increase takes into account an expected 3-percent decline in enrollment. It also factors in annual increases of two percent in the Consumer Price Index. The county recycles over 14,000 tons a year, Bowles said. Utility…
