Recently, Chesterfield County and Maggie Walker Community Land Trust celebrated the rehabilitation and sale of the first residence to an income-eligible home buyer as part of their partnership. Habitat for Humanity helped rehabilitate the home. Last year, the land trust was awarded $500,000 of Community Development Block Grant funding from Chesterfield County. The terms of the grant stipulate that the land trust retains ownership of the land and leases that land to a homeowner. The single-family house at 5616 S. Melbeck Road was purchased in December 2018 by the land trust for $170,000. The house – which was built in…

Jim HollandJim IngleKevin CarrollMurti KhanShajuan MasonTammy Ridout Beginning this week and running each week through Oct. 30, the Village News will run an answer from a question posed to six Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors candidates. Jim Ingle, Bermuda (R) Chesterfield County is one of the best places to work, live, and raise a family in the commonwealth. As such, we should be represented by servant leaders who understand that our county’s continued excellence will be dependent upon a true focus on local quality-of-life issues like education, public safety, job growth and economic development. With over 25 years of business…

Chase Miles Pohl I enjoy turning a phrase. Being a wordsmith has its privileges. Nov. 5 is right around the corner, and Chesterfield voters could have a big say in which party controls the state Legislature for the next two years. Since the Republicans only have a tenuous one-seat advantage in both the state House and Senate, each seat that could represent a tight margin will be closely watched. Virginia’s off-year election cycle usually doesn’t result in as many voters as even-numbered years – such as 2020 when President Trump will face off with former Sen. and Vice President Joe…

Lashley Dougherty By Gena Lashley Upon meeting Lindsey Dougherty, I thought she was just like the rest of us Chester mamas, other than the fact that she is running for the 62nd House of Delegates seat. Dougherty lives in Chester with her husband and two children, ages 8 and 3. She is around the same age as me, not too young but not yet into her middle-aged years. She wears glasses and was wearing professional, yet comfortable, work attire, and the kicker, she drives the dreaded minivan. She has an easy smile and a calm and patient demeanor. I immediately…

Chesterfield County supervisors last week unanimously approved rezoning applications for a residential development at 9621 Hopkins Road and a new solar farm on 1,677 acres at what was previously known as the “megasite” property, but postponed a decision on the Carvana auto storage and inspection facility until Oct. 23 so the county could advertise some new and amended proffers. The supervisors approved 98-lot cluster-style homes on 40 acres between Route 288 and Old Lane that would be known as Old Lane Crossing. Farrish Properties LLC is the builder. On the former megasite property, Torch Clean Energy of Boulder plans to…

Jesse Smith Last week, Chesterfield County announced that transportation director Jesse Smith will be its new deputy county administrator for community development, replacing longtime county employee Bill Dupler. Work is currently underway at the Chesterfield County Airport to ensure the landing and takeoff airspace in the vicinity is clear of obstruction. As part of this planned maintenance, trees were cut or removed from the area. The project is also the first step in the county’s effort to extend the runway length from 5,500 feet to 6,300 feet, which will enhance safety and increase opportunities for utilization of the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration and the Virginia Department of Aviation are providing financial support and oversight on this project, which is expected to be completed in October. For more…

A group of mostly women protested outside last week’s school board meeting about health and maintenance issues. (Courtesy photo) Chesterfield’s former school superintendent was faulted last week by a school board member for the district’s maintenance and transportation woes. At the school district’s Sept. 10 meeting, Bermuda District representative Carrie Coyner laid blame at the feet of former superintendent James F. Lane, who led Chesterfield schools from July 2016 to June 2018 and left to become the state superintendent of public instruction. Lane was replaced by Merv Daugherty, who started Nov. 1. “We have had ongoing maintenance problems,” Coyner said.…
