The entrance to County Waste’s rental property on Lewis Road is pictured above. Chesterfield County recently clarified the conditions under which County Waste trucks can use Lewis Road after the county received a complaint or two about it. A stipulation in a 1976 conditional use permit for Shoosmith Bros. Inc.’s landfill said that “no truck traffic associated with this operation shall be permitted on Lewis Road, and all access from the site shall be from Route 10.” A subsequent 1997 conditional use permit stated that “Shoosmith Brothers Inc. shall prohibit any vehicles under their ownership or control from transporting solid…

Adding bus service on a 7-mile stretch of Jefferson Davis Highway is being considered by Chesterfield County officials. County transportation director Jesse Smith spoke about the idea at last week’s board of supervisors meeting. Detailing what he called a “Route 1 Corridor Transit Study,” Smith said staff considered six options, but he highlighted two options for supervisors at the Sept. 26 meeting. One would use 40-passenger Greater Richmond Transit Co. buses that would run from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. for a $1.50 fare. Another would use 19-passenger Virginia Regional Transit buses that would run from 6:25 a.m. to 6:25…

Following a May 21 public meeting about options the county is considering to extend Nash Road to Route 10, the comments indicate no consensus among residents. Comments that were submitted in person or by email from May 21 to June 4 reveal that 23 people support the project and 25 oppose it. County staffers presented three options to extend Nash Road from Beach Road to Route 10 during a public meeting May 21. Option No. 1, which is the farthest north, has nine supporters, while option 2 has 12 and option 3 has 10 (see map on Page 7). However,…

A decision on where to build a new train station for high-speed rail is headed down the track but hasn’t reached the destination yet. “The final decision hasn’t been made yet,” said David Hyder, transportation director of the Crater Planning District Commission. He added that “it looks like” the proverbial train is headed to Colonial Heights. The Federal Railroad Administration has the final say on the matter, he said. “Whatever the FRA signs off on, we’ll sign,” he said. The selection would be made at some point following the release of a Finding of No Significant Impact, or FONSI. Officials…

A sidewalk is being added to Ecoff Avenue along with upgrades that will make it more pedestrian friendly and safer for drivers. There will be an informal meeting but no formal presentation draft plans will be available for review and staff will be on hand to field questions. The Chesterfield transportation department has developed 60 percent of the plans and scheduled the meeting. They evaluated various typical sections and determined the least disrupted was to construct sidewalk with curb…

Crossing Harrowgate Road after parking at Harrowgate Elementary School, that will be torn down as part of the East-West Freeway, those interested in finding out more information than what they were given at four community meetings held by the county, gathered in the sun Saturday on the lawn of Brad Wall. His house, like Harrowgate Elementary could be taken for the proposed freeway.          Wall and other residents are not sure exactly how it will affect them. “It’s in my backyard,” said Laurel Rothenberger. “Have they [the board members of the Chesterfield Economic Development Authority] bothered to take the…

A local man has requested that the speed limit of a zone on Chester Road north of Route 288 be changed from 55 miles per hour to 45. “A request to reduce the 55 MPH speed limit was submitted through the Chesterfield Residency office via Chesterfield County,” said Jesse Smith, director of the Chesterfield Department of Transportation (CDOT) department. “Mr. Joe Anderson felt that the speed limit should be reduced due to the presence of a fire station, several ‘blind’ driveways, close railroad crossings on intersecting streets, flooding and poor drainage, school bus stops and construction of houses nearby.” The…
