The Chester Kiwanis Club is making preparations for the 2017 Chester Kiwanis Christmas Parade. This year’s parade theme is “Parade of the Christmas Toys.” The parade will take place Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. It will begin at the Chester YMCA and end at Harrowgate Road. Entrants that wish to compete for trophies should express their group’s idea of the theme. Deadline for entries is Dec. 1. Entry fee for participants is $40 if postmarked by Nov. 1. Members of the Woodland Pond Garden Club and Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Center administrators braved the rain recently to reminisce and receive updates on the horticulture program and the Campbell-Cobb Greenhouse. The Chesterfield Life Changing Academy is part of the greenhouse program, and the garden club has been donating to them for 10 years. The greenhouse program started in 2007, under the supervision of the detention center’s then-principal, Brad Peebles. The students in the post-dispositional program, a program Peebles hired Renita Davis-Kelley (Business and Information Technology teacher at the detention center) to run, are responsible for the planting and selling the…

The Kiwanis Club of Chester is having its annual Chester 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk May 6. The run is presented in conjunction with Thomas Dale High School and the Chester YMCA and Kiwanis Club member, Duane Wittman, discussed the partnership. “We were sitting there one day and one of the guys came up and said, ‘Thomas Dale wants to talk to us about what they’re doing in a wellness program,’” Wittman said. “I think most of the schools now have a wellness program [where they work] with the kids in terms of nutrition and obesity [so] that’s how…

When Chris and Kathy Griffin bought their Colonial Revival home at the corner of Richmond and Dodomeade streets 14 years ago, the yard had numerous bushes and trees. Today, because of her love of perennials, Kathy has transformed their yard into an English garden. Over the last 12 years, the LOGs (Lover of Grapes) meet-up have been about wine and dinner. They are getting older now, and while they still love tasting different vintages, health issues are moving into the forefront. Dr. James Worsley, the Director of Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation was the guest speaker Monday, April 3, at the Chester Station No. 1503 Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting. Worsley presented an update on the capital improvements being made to the county’s historical parks. Mid-Cities Civic Association invited the Enon Volunteer Fire Department for dinner to show their appreciation and honor the firefighters during their First Responders Appreciation Dinner last month. Mid-Cities was formed unofficially in 1948, and chartered in 1950 as Rayon Park Community Corporation, later changing its name in 1953 to the current Mid-Cities Civic Association Inc. In 1956, Mid-Cities had 60-70 families as members and worked diligently with the Board of Supervisors on getting funding into the Bermuda District, particularly the Bellwood area. The Chester Woman’s Club is celebrating 80 years of community service March 25 at 11 a.m. with “Pastels in Bloom,” the theme of this year’s fashion show and luncheon. This event is held each year to raise money for scholarships for several area high school students. The show will feature fashions provided by Peebles Department Store in Colonial Heights that will be modeled by the club members and local leaders. The Hopewell Lions Club will hold their annual Bland Music Scholarship Competition March 26, 2 p.m. at Powers Memorial Baptist Church in Hopewell. There will be two divisions: vocal and instrumental. Prizes the local level will be $100 for first place winners and $50 for second place winners. First place winners in each division will compete at the District Contest, date and location to be announced soon. Prizes will also be awarded at district levels.
