The Chester Community Association (CCA) presented the business owners and property owner of 4507 Lee Street with the Orchid Award for exemplary care and upkeep of their property. Last week the Chester Community Association met with Thomas Dale JROTC members to present them with a monetary contribution of $1,000 to benefit the JROTC program. Thomas Dale JROTC has been a vital ally to the CCA over the last decade by lending support at ChesterFest every fall. Virginia was the 29th state in the United States to legalize a state run lottery when it voted 57 for and 43 opposed in 1987.  Virginia was also the first Southern state to allow a lottery. Of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, all now have lotteries with the exception of Alabama, Mississippi, Utah, Nevada, Alaska and Hawaii. The funds collected are divided into a number of pots before any monies reach the education system, which is a major destination for these funds. During the White Cane fund raising event on May 6 and 7, the Chester Lions Club met their monetary goal and the members met many wonderful supporters from the community. Many of those generous people are friends of members of the Lions and all are very kind-hearted.  There are always citizens who have stories about some earlier personal experience with Lions. The Woman’s Club of Chester has “Celebrations From Our Kitchen to Yours” cookbook available for holiday gift giving. The cookbook consists of its members favorite family recipes and is available for $12.50 plus $5.85 for shipping. This is a fund raiser for the club. To order you cookbook/s for your holiday gift giving, enclose a check or money order along with your name and mailing address and send to Woman’s Club of Chester Cookbook Orders, P.O. The Woman’s Club of Chester invites all youth, 12 through 14 years of age, to submit an original 250-word essay on the subject “What It Means To Me To Be An American Citizen.” The essay should include the feelings and beliefs of the writer. Essays will be judged on content, originality and presentation. On a separate cover sheet, writers should provide the writer’s contact information to include full name, mailing address and telephone number. For the holidays and as a way to raise funds for the club’s vision projects, the Chester Lions Club members have delicious Virginia Peanuts from Plantation Peanuts in Wakefield available for the holidays. “The club recently began offering these tasty treats as an inducement to encourage people to increase and continue their generous donations to the club,” said Lion Carelyn Sheppard, committee chair. “All monies collected from the peanut sales go first to pay for the peanuts and then to the vision (eye exams and glasses) and hearing (aids) needs of the citizenry of the community who have need of…
