Olivia Mullins as Margo and Ian Page as Billy Cane in ‘Bright Star,’ playing at 17401 Jefferson Davis Highway. The musical – which is based on the life of William Helms, a 5-day-old baby who was tossed from a train in a small valise in 1902 and survived, a sort of a modern-day Moses – is showing on Fridays, Saturdays and select Thursdays at Swift Creek Mill Theatre through May 11. I watched…

(Photo by Robyn O’Neill) Swift Creek Mill Theatre’s spring musical has a Grammy-nominated bluegrass score inspired by real events set in the 1920s through 1940s. “Bright Star” tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption. Artistic director Tom Width explains, “On Aug. 14, 1902, William Helms was walking along the Big River … when he found a small valise containing a bruised and battered five-day-old baby in the riverbed, some 50 feet below the train trestle above.” The spring musical opened March 23 and runs through May 11 on Fridays, Saturdays, and select Thursdays at 8 p.m. with matinees at…

Shawn Fenner Shawn Fenner penned his first song, “Love Triangle,” when he was 11 years old and not yet guitar savvy. The song stayed with him as he moved forward. Today, he has a promising musical career with some exhilarating experiences under his belt. Fenner attended Bellwood Elementary, Salem Middle and L.C. Bird High schools. He also took an automotive class at Chesterfield Tech Center. As a Marine Reservist, he trained at Parris Island, S.C. “When I was in middle school, I wrote a play,” Fenner said. “I got paid $10 for it.” Song writing came later. Singing karaoke helped…
