Three former Thomas Dale High School students, and recent college graduates visited Washington in March. Andrias White (George Mason University), Maryann Chan and Greg Gallop II (both University of Virginia graduates) saw city landmarks, heard motivational speeches and received sage advice. Their itinerary included tours of the U.S. Capitol and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.  They also attended a presentation by Sgt. Carol Adams of the Richmond Police Department,  whose message was similar to the one she delivered at the White House a few weeks earlier.  They got a personal tour of the Old Post Office…

RICHMOND – Sean, 25, didn’t socialize much in high school, but respite weekends at the Greater Richmond ARC’s Camp Baker in Chesterfield now give him the chance. Sean truly enjoys his time with his Camp Baker buddies, according to his mom Teresa, who says it is a safe place where he gets a break from his daily household routine. Bensley Park will honor all veterans and active military personnel Nov. 12 with a “Navy Day” theme ceremony. The two-hour ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., and its special guest speaker will be Navy Lt. Morgan Looney, a Richmond native. Looney graduated from Douglas Freeman High School in 2003 and from the United States Naval Academy in 2007. Virginia State University will host a presentation by Ira Wallace, Central Virginia master gardener and owner of the cooperative Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. The presentation, Family Heirloom Seeds: Saving Our Stories, Saving Biodiversity, will be held on Thursday, April 7 at 3:30 PM in the Engineering Auditorium. Wallace coordinates variety selection and new seed grower contracts at Southern Exposure. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will present a family-friendly drop-in event at the County Museum on Saturday, April 16. Stop by anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to learn about the camp life of Union and Confederate soldiers, and their uniforms, equipment, food, military drills and pastimes. While the event is free, donations are welcome. The County Museum is located at 6813 Mimms Loop, on Chesterfield’s historic 1917 Courthouse Green along Route 10/Iron Bridge Road. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) continues its ninth annual “Winter Lecture Series” that started on January 8 and continues every second Friday through March 18.. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will present a lecture at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 30 at the County Museum, 6813 Mimms Loop, in Chesterfield. Ryan O’Hallahan, Chesterfield County Museum staff member and graduate history student at Virginia Commonwealth University, will discuss the experiences of women during the Civil War. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) presented its ninth annual “Winter Lecture Series” in Chesterfield on January 8. The series continues every second Friday through March 18, 2016. Each lecture begins at 7 p.m. On January 22, Sean Edwards, historic interpreter at Henricus Historical Park will discuss “Virginia Indians’ Reaction to Colonial Contact.” The third lecture, on February 5, entitled, “The Many Faces of Van Lew,” will discuss Richmond abolitionist, philanthropist and spy Elizabeth Van Lew. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will present a lecture on Numismatics and the Civil War at historic Magnolia Grange House Museum on Saturday, October 3 at 12 p.m. The lecture will be presented by local numismatist (collection of coins) and currency dealer Parry Bragg who serves as a director on the board of the Richmond Coin Club as well as the board of the Virginia Coin Club.
