The popular ChesterFest event is back Saturday, Sept. 28. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Chester Village Green and surrounding streets. “This year’s music will be done different from years past,” organizer Elliott Fausz said. “We won’t have any large acts on the main stage. Instead, we will have several small/solo acts scattered around the festival. Attendees mingle at last week’s Fall Fling. (Ellie Browning) The Fall Fling kicked off on Sept. 11 underneath the stars and stripes of the largest American flag in Virginia. Event-goers experienced delicious barbeque, listened to music and got the opportunity to honor first responders. Representatives from the state police and Chesterfield County police, fire and EMS received a plaque to commemorate their efforts in keeping the public safe. History buffs will be able to visit 19 Richmond-area historic sites for free on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21-22. Chesterfield County’s annual Fourth of July Celebration, presented by Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation and the Virginia Credit Union, will be held Thursday, July 4, at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds, 10300 Courthouse Road. The Richmond Brass and Percussion Consort will present its annual “Concert in Honor of America” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at Chester Presbyterian Church, 3424 W. Hundred Road. The Richmond Brass and Percussion Consort is a large brass ensemble made up of trumpets, French horns, trombones, euphoniums, and tubas with percussion performing music from the 1600s through the present. From Sousa marches to popular and patriotic favorites through the centuries, the concert promises to be an enjoyable evening for the whole family — children through grandparents!

Saxophonist Paul Saunders attracted children’s attention. It was 91 degrees, and visitors to the Chester Village Green on June 6 were treated to some hot jazz from Fort Lee’s “First Class Jazz Band.” The seven-member group performed at the 17th annual event sponsored by the Chester Kiwanis Club and the Village News. However, it might be the last time a band from Fort Lee performs in Chester anytime soon. Staff Sgt. Michael Kiese, a Hawaii native, plays electric guitar for the jazz band.
