By Linda Fausz Chester Library nearly doubled its usual Saturday traffic when over 700 children, teens and adults got a taste of all different kinds of art, on Saturday, during Chester Library’s roll-out signature event “A Taste of Art.” Activity was happening in every corner and the excitement was felt throughout with staff and volunteers dressed in black and sporting colorful berets, to represent the long-standing stereotype of the intellectual, film director, artist, hipster, or poet. “Our goal was to celebrate all types of art,” said Jessica Harshbarger. The Chesterfield County Public Library (CCPL) was recognized for winning a Virginia Association of Counties (VACo)Achievement Award for its “Created Equal: Engaging the Community through Conversation” program. In 2014, the library system participated in the grant-funded Created Equal program, which was designed to encourage communities to join in dialogue about the meanings of freedom and equality. The library worked with the school system, local media and local university professors to offer several events and screened three documentaries: “The Abolitionists,” “Freedom Riders” and “The Loving Story.” Participants also watched film clips highlighting historical events and took part in group discussions.
