Chesterfield County has named Andrew G. Gillies as its new planning director. County leaders selected Gillies after a national recruitment process. He is currently the community services director for Farmers Branch, a suburb of Dallas, Texas. Having worked for more than 30 years in the planning and community development field, Gillies brings a wide range of experience to Chesterfield County. Over his career, Gillies has worked primarily for Texas municipalities; however, he served as the executive director for a large city-county planning commission in Kentucky for seven years. Following their most productive car show ever, the Corvette Club of Richmond donated $1,000 to FeedMore. Club president Bob Brody recently presented a check for $1,000 to Doug Pick, the non-profit’s CEO, and Christy Dalton, itsCommunity Events Manager. The club raised money for FeedMore at their 21st Annual All Corvette RoundUp, which was held this summer in Chester. The show featured over 100 Corvettes of all ages, from a 1953 white convertible (the first year Corvettes were produced) through all body styles up to 2017. The Richmond Railroad Museum is celebrating the first-ever Richmond Train Day 2017. On Saturday, Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the museum will be surrounded by a one-of-a-kind locomotive bounce house, exciting kiddie train rides, food vendors, and live entertainment. Kids of all ages are invited to experience Richmond’s railroad history inside and outside the museum. A young fisherman from the Chester area used his bare hands to catch a fighting 32-inch northern pike at Lake Vermilion in northeastern Minnesota. Kalob Powell, 18, was checking his fish on a stringer hanging from a dock and spotted the predatory pike with its jaws clamped on one of them. He reached down, grabbed the big sharp-toothed fish, and pulled it free. “I was confused because I didn’t expect it,” he said. “I put my right hand in his gills to lift him onto the dock.” Powell didn’t have a fish scale, but various length-to-weight conversion charts indicate that…

German POWs during WWII were held at Bellwood (DGSC). At its height, 2,000 POWs would be camped at Bellwood. As they arrived, they would build their own barra cks, athletic field and place of worship. A barbed-wire stockade circled the camp which was under surveillance by American M.P. guards who were completed armed. Some area residents, thought the prisoners may be living a good life at the camp that sat right in their community. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Ettrick Park last Tuesday to unveil their newly renovated basketball and tennis courts. The unveiling was held in conjunction with 34th annual National Night Out celebration, an event that brings police and residents together in support of crime prevention. Kelly to serve as interim police chief Col. Thierry G. Dupuis announced that following h is retirement on Sept. 1, 2017, Lt. Col. Daniel W. Kelly will serve as interim chief of police. Kelly’s appointment will be effective Sept. 1, 2017, and will continue until the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors appoints a new chief of police.
