The Fort Lee Centennial Exhibit, Mobilizing for War, is officially open in Chesterfield County at the Historic 1892 Jail. This exhibit commemorates the establishment of Camp Lee (later Fort Lee) as part of the mobilization efforts of the U.S. Army for World War I, and its current status as the center of logistical sustainment for the U.S. Army. The exhibit contains war posters meant were to mobilize the country to either join the Army or support the war effort as civilians. 230 percent increase in overdoses since 2014 With statistics indicating one in five heroin overdoses in Chesterfield County results in death, county agencies have partnered to produce a public service announcement bringing attention to the dangers of heroin addiction and the resources available to those affected by it. “This is a widespread epidemic confronting local governments and law enforcement across the nation,” said Dr. Joseph P. A bastion of suburban life in the 1970s, Chesterfield County began its climb in population just under 80,000 in 1970 to around 340,000 today. An unprecedented growth rate of 8.3 percent in building permits during the ’70s has yet to be surpassed in the 37 years since. One of Chester’s most influential businessmen received a long overdue recognition last week at the Chester Business Association’s annual picnic. Sam West accepted the Snead-Stebbins Business Person of the Year award for his contributions to the Chester community. The chairman of the board at Citizens Bank & Trust, a Blackstone native, has made a positive impact since arriving in Chester over 50 years ago. After he and his partners opened the accounting firm West, Crawley & Winn in 1974, they helped numerous businesses establish themselves and thrive through the good times and bad, according to several association members in attendance.…

Pastor Rich Finck is a sporty fella with his old ragtop Mustang in the first space. His days of parking there will have come to a close by Friday, when he retires after 42 years of service to the Lutheran Church system. Chesterfield County Public Library is offering free lunches this summer as part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program. Lunches will be served at four locations. The meals are free and no enrollment is necessary. Meals are available to all children 18 and younger. The Richmond Brass & Percussion Consort, under the direction of George L. Tuckwiller III and featuring soprano Lisa Edwards Burrs, will present their annual “Concert in Honor of America” on Monday, July 3, 7:30 p.m. at Chester Presbyterian Church. The Chester Community Association kicked off their summer concert series, Third Thursdays on the Green, with a bluegrass band that has played the venue in the past; Cary Street Ramblers. More concerts are schedule for this summer: July 20, August 17, and ChesterFest, September 23. Three former Thomas Dale High School students, and recent college graduates visited Washington in March. Andrias White (George Mason University), Maryann Chan and Greg Gallop II (both University of Virginia graduates) saw city landmarks, heard motivational speeches and received sage advice. Their itinerary included tours of the U.S. Capitol and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.  They also attended a presentation by Sgt. Carol Adams of the Richmond Police Department,  whose message was similar to the one she delivered at the White House a few weeks earlier.  They got a personal tour of the Old Post Office…
