Self-described hopeless romantic Ken Davis never thought he would fall in love again. At 61, he had been married twice; his first marriage ended in divorce, and he was made a widower with his second. But he did find true love again, and he wanted his bride-to-be to have a fairy-tale wedding. Judy Bailey, also 61, and Davis were married Saturday in a formal church service with bridesmaids and groomsmen, a flower girl and a ring bearer, and a horse-drawn carriage with two coachmen in waiting. “Ken planned the carriage, from Hundley Carriages,” Judy said. “He kind of wanted me…

Spiderman stepped aside so Darth Vader could get through the milling crowd. At the check-out desk of the Meadowdale Library, Princess Leia scanned books for patrons. Stormtroopers, super heroes, and all kinds of characters one could imagine wondered about. It was the Meadowdale Library annual Comic Con and the community responded by attending by the hundreds. The event not only gave one the opportunity for “Cosplay,” the art of dressing up as a character from a movie, book or video game, but vendors of many kinds were on hand with items such as graphic novels, comic books, food and more.…

In what looks like good news for home owners in Chesterfield County, Dr. Joseph Casey, Chesterfield County Administrator, indicated that the 2017 proposed budget, while staying consistent with the last couple of years, could lead to a reduced real estate tax rate within the coming years. Currently the rate stands at $.96 per $100 of assessed value of a residence. The real tax rate could drop slightly by $.01 to $.95 according to Dr. Casey. “If we can position the county at some later year we would like to return to a pre-recession rate,” Casey said. Casey wrote in an…

If you attended high school in Chester in the 1970s, you would have lived and breathed Thomas Dale High School especially if you were a cheerleader and the homecoming queen. But cheering wasn’t enough for an energetic girl who would go on to garner accolades from her life as a newspaper reporting. While working toward a degree in Liberal Arts from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, she worked on the college newspaper, The Collegiate Times. Her degree in journalism and communication set her on a path that would last the rest of her life. Kathryn Thompson Leckie died the…

The popular swimming hole right off U.S. Route One between Richmond and Petersburg, (directly across the Bermuda Crossroads Shopping Center) was the most refreshing refuge from humidity and sweltering dog days west of Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It was a mecca for locals seeking a few hours of blessed relief and a major vacation destination for tourists from throughout the state. Folks were drawn by its sandy beach, water slides, and the high diving board where giggling girls congregated to watch the boys show off. The adjacent dance hall filled the evening air with Big Band melodies. Everyone…

Processing over14,000 individuals in 2016, Sheriff Karl Leonard took the opportunity to show the Chesterfield NAACP legal redress committee how the jail manages these vast numbers. Last Friday, the sheriff along with Captain Eric Jones escorted eight members of the branch on a full tour of the county facilities. Sheriff Leonard first demonstrated where violators are processed, allowed their phone call, and prepared for incarceration, if needed. While the health of every inmate is of great concern, Jail Medical Director Dr. G. Mantovani Gay led the group through the second floor medical center which included three exam rooms, an isolation room,…

It’s been almost 10 years since the Americana Mobile Home Park’s last resident pulled up stakes to find a new home in another park of the county. Initially the development will consist of 385 urban style apartments units in three buildings along the west side…

Mid-Cities Civic Association invited the Enon Volunteer Fire Department for dinner to show their appreciation and honor the firefighters during their First Responders Appreciation Dinner last month. In 1956, Mid-Cities had 60-70 families as members and worked diligently with the Board of Supervisors on getting funding into the Bermuda District, particularly the Bellwood area. These days, Mid-Cities has shifted towards community service and charitable purposes. In 2016, the organization saw an amazing…
