The Chesterfield County Electoral Board has announced the appointment of Constance L. Tyler as General Registrar and Director of Elections. Tyler will succeed Lawrence C. Haake III, who will retire effective April 1, after 22 years of service. Tyler is the current deputy registrar for Chesterfield County. She has 22 years of experience in voter registration and elections, 16 of which were as deputy registrar in Richmond. “Constance Tyler is a veteran in the elections world and Chesterfield County is fortunate she is here to take over,” said Haake. “She has served admirably as deputy registrar, and I expect great…

It was about 1836 when the picture above was taken of the Schooner John J. Ward with Capt. Van Cleef as skipper. The terminal at Bermuda Hundred was at the end of Bermuda Hundred Road on the James River. You can still see some of pilings left from the days it was a vibrant port. The Chester Woman’s Club is celebrating 80 years of community service March 25 at 11 a.m. with “Pastels in Bloom,” the theme of this year’s fashion show and luncheon. This event is held each year to raise money for scholarships for several area high school students. The show will feature fashions provided by Peebles Department Store in Colonial Heights that will be modeled by the club members and local leaders. The Chesterfield County Black History Month Celebration Program announced the recipients of its Leadership for the 21st Century Scholarships at their business and Scholarship Awards Breakfast Friday, Feb. 17. Scholarship recipients attended, along with their parents or guardians, to receive the recognition and certificates of achievement. Six scholarships were awarded each in the amount of $2,500. Winners were selected from each of the five Chesterfield County magisterial districts, and one scholarship was awarded to a Chesterfield County student from the Maggie L. Walker Governor School. The Virginia Fire Chiefs Association today recognized Chesterfield County Fire Chief Edward “Loy” Senter Jr. with its highest honor, the Glenn A. Gaines Leadership Legacy Award. Senter accepted the award while attending the Virginia Fire Rescue Conference in Virginia Beach. The award is named for former U.S. Fire Administrator and Fairfax County Fire Chief Glenn Gains, an icon in the fire-services industry. Senter was selected from a pool of nominees, which can include any current career or volunteer firefighter in Virginia. C.C. Wells Elementary School participated in the first Jump Rope for Heart fund raiser benefiting the American Heart Association. The school raised $3,744.87 as of press time. The ingredients now combining for the dish that is the county’s budget for fiscal year 2018 come from input from the budget staff, the county administrator, the superintendent of schools, and everyday peiople in communities.
