Route 10 Bridge Honored in name of Sgt. Aaron Xavier Wittman On Sunday, the bridge on West Hundred Road in Chester was named in honor of fallen Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, U.S. Army. At a ceremony at Chester Village Green, the bridge was officially named the Sergeant Aaron Xavier Wittman Memorial Bridge. Representatives and alumni from The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina, where Wittman graduated, attended the ceremony. Lt. Col. Jack W. Parker Jr., U.S. Army and The Citadel Class of 1987, read a poem that he wrote in Wittman’s honor. Wittman died on Jan. 10, 2013, while serving…

SPORTS: December 6 the CQL football little league went helmet to helmet in the World Series. It was the big game for little league football players last Saturday. Eight teams played beginning at 10 a.m. with the Minors in the Chesterfield Quarterback League Superbowl. The league is celebrating 60 years and is the oldest little league association in the state of Virginia. The season officially opened on Dec. 1 with the Annual Illumination Ceremony presented by the Chester Library, then on Harrowgate Road. The tree lighting ceremony was opened by Nancy Van Auken, Chester Library supervisor. She welcomed neighbors and introduced Bermuda District Supervisor Jack McHale, who gave a short holiday speech. Local Girl Scout troops led a Christmas sing-a-long organized by Sarah Gregory, Gale Feind, and Lu Henderson. Then came the signal from McHale to light the tree and the arrival of Santa Claus. Each year we search for ideas, scraping the inside of our giving hearts for what type of sweater to purchase for Johnny and what size skinny jeans Jenny wears. Some of us spend doing things like inviting someone less fortunate into our home for a Christmas meal. The local wreath-laying ceremony honoring deceased veterans, part of the Annual Wreath Across America Day program, was held Saturday at Sunset Memorial Park. A local man has requested that the speed limit of a zone on Chester Road north of Route 288 be changed from 55 miles per hour to 45. “A request to reduce the 55 MPH speed limit was submitted through the Chesterfield Residency office via Chesterfield County,” said Jesse Smith, director of the Chesterfield Department of Transportation (CDOT) department. “Mr. Joe Anderson felt that the speed limit should be reduced due to the presence of a fire station, several ‘blind’ driveways, close railroad crossings on intersecting streets, flooding and poor drainage, school bus stops and construction of houses nearby.” The…

Winifred Henderson Wheelhouse, known as “Wini,” will celebrate her 100th birthday at the end of December. She was born Dec. 30, 1916 in Halifax County, Va. to Nonie Lewis and Walter R. Henderson. The fifth of nine children, including six girls, she is the last of them living.. She married Stuart M. Wheelhouse April 6, 1935 in Blackstone, Va. at the age of 19. They had four sons and a daughter. After Stuart died in 1973, she went to work for Seward Luggage in Petersburg. Wini always had a garden and canned or froze her bounty each year. She loves…

Chester resident Bruce Brockwell has been appointed president of the Hopewell/Prince George Chamber of Commerce for 2017. He will take office Jan. 1. Brockwell, who is Executive Vice President and Chief Banking Officer of EVB Bank, has been serving as the HPG Chamber’s President Elect for the past two years. School Board seeks public input on 2017-18 calendar The Chesterfield County School Board is seeking comments from parents, employees and the community about the proposed calendar for 2017-18, which is available online at mychesterfieldschools.com. Comments may be e-mailed to [email protected] or mailed to Proposed Calendar, Chesterfield County Public Schools, P.O. Box 10, Chesterfield, VA 23832. Comments will be accepted through Jan. 4.
