Two Chesterfield County Public Schools students won the Virginia War Memorial 2016 Veterans Day Essay Contest, and the students both read their winning essays at the Veterans Day Ceremony Nov. 11 at the Virginia War Memorial. The winner for the middle school category is Jordan Bowe, an eighth-grade student at Matoaca Middle, who wrote an essay titled “Could You Walk in Their Boots.” The high school category winner is Lauren Faherty, an 11th-grade student at Manchester High who wrote “My Family’s Love of America.” The essay contest was open to all public, private, and homeschooled middle and high school students…

By Danielle Ozbat In an effort to foster better community relations and create a positive impression of police, the Chesterfield County Police Department executed a policy change that allows police officers to issue written warnings for minor traffic offenses. There were lots of helpers on hand to assist with a very special project, assembling canes for veterans. No elves were spotted but people and youth from all walks of life pitched right in. A free basketball program that started in the mid-1950s is reaching out to the community for volunteers. The Chester Presbyterian Basketball Association has provided opportunities for boys and girls from ages eight to 15 an to participate in organized sporting events. Challenges these children face range from financial challenges to mental and physical challenges. Initially organized by the Colonial Heights Jaycees and later moved to the Chester Jaycees, the program continues by the Chester Presbyterian Church as an outreach ministry and is co-sponsored by Chesterfield County Parks & Recreation. This year’s parade theme for the Chester’s Kiwanis Christmas Parade is “Christmas Movies” including Dorothy Jaeckle, Bermuda District Supervisor as our Grand Marshal. Route 10 will be closed between the Chester YMCA and Harrowgate Road beginning at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, December 11. Curtis Elementary School as part of his Eagle Scout “journey.” The project includes two sensory boards, a tree cookie walking path, and three play tables that can be filled with sand, water, or soil. The sensory boards include items that appeal to the senses and build fine and gross motor skills.
