CHESTERFIELD — The Shepherd’s Center of Chesterfield has an urgent need for volunteer drivers to transport seniors to medical appointments and the grocery store, and for phone receptionists to receive calls and schedule rides. Receptionists would work from the Shepherd’s Center office at 6800 Lucy Corr Blvd. Areas in need of drivers include Chesterfield County, VCU Medical Center, Colonial Heights, Chester, Hopewell and Prince George. Can you help by offering a few hours to either provide or arrange a ride? The Shepherd’s Center of Chesterfield, a nonprofit interfaith organization, offers free accompanied transportation, in-home handyman services, and low-cost classes to…

CHESTER – This year’s second annual Hops in the Park is Saturday, November 12, and there are exciting new features being added to the event. CHESTERFIELD – The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will host an Old World toys and games event at the County Museum on Saturday, August 27, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Toys and Games of the Past invites both young and old to have fun and learn about traditional children’s playthings such as Jacob’s ladder, knucklebones and quoits.  Test your skill with the cup and ball, attempt to knock over all nine pins in a game of “skittles,” and find out why the tenth pin was added to make it the forerunner of our bowling game today.  No batteries required!…

NORTH CHESTERFIELD – Hundreds of excited visitors streamed into the St. Augustine Catholic Church Festival during the four-day event last weekend. Squeals of delight could be heard from excited children as they spotted the pony rides, games, and other midway rides such as the Sizzler and a Ferris wheel. The adults seemed to be smiling as brightly as the children. Adriana Ambrose found her favorite ride right away. Sitting proudly on a brown and white pony, holding snuggly to the saddle, Ambrose rode like an expert while the owner carefully walked the pony around giving her an experience to cherish. “I…

CHESTER – The blazing sun and extreme heat did not delay Boy Scouts from Troop 2837 based at Chester Baptist Church, working on a construction project for a fellow member and his Eagle Scout project at the Enon Fire Training Station. A team of 12 Scouts and seven adults, working under extreme conditions, followed the directions of Scout Joseph Short, last Friday and Saturday to construct a 9/11 Memorial for the Chesterfield County Fire Department. This was a major undertaking for boys 10 and up. The center piece is a 4 foot by 5 foot, 500-pound section of steel from…

Nineteen young performers showed our community that they can come home again. These actors and singers, current and former students of the Chester Performing Arts Studio (CPAS), came back for a special camp reunion. This two-week celebration culminated with a performance of “High School Musical, Jr.” held July 22 at Thomas Dale High School. The teenagers began planning this event while attending last summer’s camp session. Many of them have gone on to become strong contributors to such programs as Thomas Dale’s Specialty Center for the Visual and Performing Arts and the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and…

Chester was experiencing a growth spurt 18 years ago, just before we reached into the new millennium. Some believed that 2000 would be the end of the world. But, as it turned out, it was only the beginning of the Village News. In August of 1998, the new kid on the publishing block was the Village News. Working from the dining room table the first year, 12 months later we moved to an office. As we sit in our office on the Village Green in Chester we know the some of the dreams of those in Chester have come to…

Guy Rose began reading comic books at the age of seven. By the time he was 11, he was a collector and from that time his collection grew like the cast in the latest X-Men movie. Rose, 62, has been collecting comic books for 53 years. His involvement in what is now a phenomenon has brought him from hobbyist to seller to a Comicon promoter. According to the VAComicon website, Rose was the original founder of VA Comicon way back in 1986 when it was called CRCC for the “Chester, Richmond Comic Club.”  Even though he has passed the mantle…

As the rain gave way, the grillers at Bensley Community Center bravely cooked 550 hot dogs, preparing for the National Night Out crowd to arrive. Fortunately, the elements saw fit to grant mercy on the community and the sun soon was shining. “With everything going on in the country, it’s time to come together,” said Chesterfield Sheriff Karl Leonard, addressing the audience. “National Night out is all about working with the community. We realize we couldn’t do our job without you; it’s a team effort.” National Night Out was also special because it featured the dedication of two futsal fields…
