An opportunity is coming on Aug. 2, throughout Chesterfield County, for the community to meet, become acquainted and form bonds with police officers, right in their own neighborhoods. After witnessing a young man steal food from a convenience store for his family in 2012, Melissa Morgan immediately began her mission to help feed community members living in poverty. Focusing on the corridor along Jefferson Davis Highway, Morgan and her husband worked from the back of their truck, delivering bread every Sunday to families living in various motels along Route 1. Soon thereafter, they began to distribute backpacks with school supplies as well, ever expanding their operation. Of the Top 25 Virginia Localities with the Highest Toxic Air Emissions, three are in the greater Richmond area, with two in the top ten: Chesterfield zip code 23836 ranks fifth, the City of Hopewell zip code 23860 ranks seventh alongside Hanover (23005) which is No. 20. The wild and wonderful historic James River stretches 340 miles from its headwaters to the Chesapeake Bay. This July, for the sixth year under the guidance of the James River Association (JRA), 27 students from across Virginia are embarking on an educational expedition down the James River for an amazing adventure that is sure to be an experience that each participant will remember forever. The National School Public Relations Association is honoring Dr. James F. Lane as one of the nation’s Superintendents to Watch. Only 24 school superintendents across  the country were selected, and Dr. Lane is the only Virginia superintendent on the list. The Superintendents to Watch program recognizes educational leaders with fewer than five years experience of the superintendent position who understand that effective communication leads to school and student success.
