Chesterfield County Public Library has received several nature backpacks for each of its 10 libraries. The backpacks are part of a partnership with the Library of Virginia, Virginia State Parks, and the Science Museum of Virginia. They include a free parking pass to any of the Virginia State Parks and are stocked with tools for customers to use to better explore and learn about nature. HistoriCorps, a nationally recognized historic preservation organization based in Colorado, starts work this summer on a new project of local significance. Historic Summerseat, located in the Village of Ettrick and owned by Virginia State University (VSU), will undergo exterior preservation using a cadre of volunteers and students over a six-week period. This field school will serve as a demonstration project for HistoriCorps and creates the opportunity for the organization to establish a local preservation program to serve other historic structures in the region. Chesterfield County recently named Dr. James D. Worsley as new director of the Chesterfield County parks and recreation department. Worsley is filling the position of longtime director Michael S. Golden, who retired April 1. Worsley will begin Aug. 1. Currently the parks and recreation director for Columbus, Ga., – he held that a position starting in 2011 –Worsley has a doctorate in leadership studies from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees in recreation management and parks, recreation and tourism, both from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Spinning a clever twist on a common phrase, the Old Dominion Postcard Club (ODPCC) introduces its unique “House of Postcards” exhibit at the Chester library. Throughout the month of July, library patrons can peruse the club’s colorful postcard displays. The exhibit’s title, evoking the classic house of cards, works on a literal and a figurative level. Hoping to grab library visitors’ attention as they enter, the club members constructed an actual house of postcards, which stands seven feet tall. “As far as we know, it’s the first in the world,” ODPCC president, Mike Uzel, says. Chesterfield County residents are invited to spend an evening outdoors with neighbors and police on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., for National Night Out, an annual event held across the country to strengthen neighborhood and police-community partnerships, while heightening crime- and drug-prevention awareness. The Chesterfield County Police Department recently held a kickoff event for this year’s National Night Out, and is looking for neighborhoods to register their parties this August. Unlike Chester’s sister location Ashland, which is home to a number of fraternities, Chester has had only one over its 150-year history. Gamma Nu, a chapter of the Pi Phi fraternity, fit the bill as an active civic organization that won numerous national awards for their charity, activities, and civic work. The third annual “Get Your Butts to Broadway” Festival in downtown Hopewell is right around the corner. Featuring some of the best backyard pork butt cookers in the region, this festival puts BBQ cookers to the test, unleashing the best butts known to man.
