The Empowering Neighborhoods Forum will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Thomas R. Fulgham Conference Center (Old Clover Hill High School, located at 13900 Hull Street Road), from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is free of charge to the public. The theme of the Forum is revitalizing Chesterfield County by improving homes and neighborhoods. A wide variety of workshops, activities, vendors, and information resources will be available to help residents and community leaders revitalize their own communities. During the morning of April 19, Off Grid by Design donated and installed a one kilowatt solar panel system at Falling Creek Middle. The solar panel was installed along the bus loop, just behind the school’s garden. It will offer hands-on learning about the green power industry. The clean, renewable energy from the solar panel will power a recharging station for student Chromebooks and will recharge 12-volt batteries used with underwater robotics vehicles. The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) will present two special events at Historic Magnolia Grange House Museum on Saturday April 23 and Tuesday May 10. The Saturday program on April 23 offers costumed interpreter and reenactor Jason Jones portraying John Wilkes Booth, assassin of President Abraham Lincoln. The program will reveal the thoughts and rationalizations that led to Booth’s violent actions as he was on the run eluding capture in April of 1865. Tickets are now on sale for the 2016 Senior Idol Competition, featuring 12 talented seniors, 50 years of age and older, competing for cash prizes of $300, $200 and $100 respectively, on Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at Victory Tabernacle Church located at 11700 Genito Road in Midlothian. By Linda Fausz Historic Garden Week takes place this Saturday, April 23 through Saturday, April 30. The Chester Garden Club, a member of the Garden Club of Virginia, will not be conducting any house tours this year, but will be participating with horticulture and design exhibits at the Chester Library beginning Wednesday, April 20 through Saturday, April 30. Several of the club members will have a design, showcasing their talents as a floral designer and/or a specimen from their garden for the horticulture exhibit. The Bright Hope Railroad was an important export tool for Chesterfield County. The Bright Hope hauled coal from the Midlothian mines through Chester to Osborne’s Landing, approximately where the Virginia Dominion Power Plant is located. In 1877, the narrow gage railroad had its shops located in Chester generally along the current Shop Street. The Bright Hope ran four coal trains a day and one passenger train. The line went into foreclosure 1899 and reorganized as the Tidewater-Western. The rails were eventually sold to France in 1917 for use in World War I. By the end of the war the rails…

Bermuda Square Shopping Center was moving right along with renovations. But now the construction has slowed. After completing about 50 percent of the project, the remaining retail space is either incomplete or on hold. The pad foundation, meant for the Martin’s grocery, is apparently delayed although DDR, the shopping center developer, would not comment on the status of the construction. At issue are two Belgian companies Ahold and Delhaize, two large Europeon grocery chains, which received permission, from the Belgian Competion Authority (BCA), for a huge mergerer. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1) (JDH) is improving the intersection of JDH and Old Bermuda Hundred Road. Due to sight line issues, the intersection has been redesigned and will include: turn lanes on both routes at this intersection as well as a traffic signal and pedestrian accommodations. The purpose of this project is to improve safety and mitigate congestion at the intersection of Route 1 JDH and Route 618 (Old Bermuda Hundred Road). Traffic impacts during construction will be minimal.

A court order changing Congressional districts, do to alleged gerrymandering, requires Chesterfield Registrar Lawrence Haake to divide voting precincts along the new 4th and 7th Congressional boundaries creating four precincts out of the current two – Beach Voting Precinct and Bird Voting Precinct. The new precincts will vote at the same polling place as always. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors must also consider an ordinance dividing the Bird Voting Precinct in the Dale Magisterial District into two precincts by creating a new precinct out of the northern portion of the Bird Voting Precinct and using the same polling place, Bird…
