Local business woman and banker, Lee Taylor, has worked for 43 years in the banking business. Last Thursday was a testimony to her service and commitment in the community banking system when friends, customers and former bosses came together for a retirement party at Brock’s BBQ in Chester. She had no idea of the surprise while being escorted in by Paul Carnes and said it was the best she has ever had. “I have the best friends in the world,” she said. “I love them all.” Jim Brock organized the party. The most snow recorded in Central Virginia fell 1940 between January 24-25. The blizzard dropped 21.6 inches of snow on the area, officially. The Board of Supervisors last week approved a request to construct another section of sidewalk along the east side of Harrowgate Road. (Curtis Street to Hyde Park Drive). The sidewalk project will be paid for by an appropriation of $400,000 in anticipated Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reimbursements to the Chesterfield Department of Transportation (CDOT) and $100,000 from the General Road Improvement Account. “I have been working with CDOT to have sidewalks put in throughout the Bermuda district especially roads such as Harrowgate, where there are a large number of residential neighborhoods,” said Bermuda District Supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle. “Barbara Smith in…

Steve Elswick became the chairman of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors last week during the first meeting of the county’s government body. Without a strike of the gavel, County Administrator J.L. “Jay” Stegmaier brought the Board meeting to order. He took the center seat saying that he would take the place of a regular Board chair until a new chair could be elected. Matoaca District Supervisor Elswick sat next to Stegmaier, ready to take on the chairmanship fo the second year. During the night of December 23, 1998, an ice storm now referred to as The Storm, pummeled Chester leaving an astounding amount of damage in its wake. By morning the ice had built up on branches enough to cause their collapse, and when the boughs broke they brought down with them power lines, power poles, phone and cable lines. Chester was disabled. Most had no power; some were without phones and cable did not matter.
