As the pre-diabetes rate continues to rise, few Chester residents know that they are at risk. The Chester Family YMCA is encouraging local residents to learn their risks for pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, and to take preventive steps to potentially reduce their chances of developing the disease. New statistics for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that one in four Americans (86 million people) have pre-diabetes, up from 79 million in 2010. The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood to help ensure a sufficient blood supply throughout the holiday season. A Blood Drive will take place November 21 at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chester YMCA at 3011 W. Hundred Road. A seasonal decline in donations often occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors get busy with family gatherings and travel. However, patients do not get a holiday vacation from needing lifesaving transfusions. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.

A monument to God that stands proudly on a hill off Centralia Road is now considered an historic landmark. A Virginia Historical Highway Marker was dedicated last Saturday with most of the First Baptist Church (Centralia) congregation on hand to celebrate its unveiling. Three Chesterfield County seniors, Louise Coleman, Brucie East and Mary Jones, have been inducted into the Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame, a program established in 1983 to recognize seniors who make a difference in their communities. Coleman, East and Jones were recognized last week during a ceremony at the Chesterfield County Government Complex. Eleven Chesterfield County seniors were nominated this year for the Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame for their valuable contributions to the community, collectively totaling 52,513 hours. Deputy Fire Chief Mark D. Sacra will retire from the Chesterfield County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department on December 1, 2015. Deputy Chief Sacra graduated from Recruit School No.10 in November, 1979, and has faithfully served the county for over 36 years. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1984, Lieutenant in 1987, Captain in 1990, Battalion Chief in 2001 and then Deputy Chief in 2007 where he was assigned to oversee the Emergency Operations Division. This year’s Chester Christmas parade theme, “All I Want for Christmas Is…” will include the former Green Bay Packers fullback, Super Bowl XXXI champion and Thomas Dale graduate William “Boogie” Henderson as our Grand Marshal.
