The longevity of a local landfill may depend on an application filed recently with Chesterfield County. Shoosmith Bros., Inc. recently filed a permit application with the county that would allow it to use some 180 acres of land which includes a rock quarry that it acquired in 1997. The James River Advisory Council’s 25th annual Parade of Lights has been rescheduled to July 21 after the December event was canceled due to the weather. The “Christmas in July” Parade of Lights will be held Saturday, July 21. Viewers will gather along the shoreline at several sites along the river in Richmond and Chesterfield and Henrico counties to see the boats and enjoy the entertainment. Admission is free. Some folks admire them and some despise them, but whatever your take on snakes, killing one in Virginia can result in a $500 fine. CHESTERFIELD — Three senior citizens were recently inducted into Chesterfield’s Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame for contributions they have made to the community since age 60. Gretchen Craig, Frank Linkous and Robert Pratt were recognized at the Board of Supervisors June 27 meeting. Craig has been volunteering at J.G. Hening Elementary School since 2014. Her volunteerism at the school began by assisting students in second grade in reading and math, as well as helping kindergarten students adjust to their new surroundings. CHESTER – Chester United Methodist Church has a new pastor, the Rev. Clara Price Gestwick. Gestwick earned a bachelor’s degree in Christian Education from Columbia College in 1987 and a master’s degree in divinity from Duke Divinity School in 1990. She was ordained a deacon in 1990 and an elder in 1992. Gestwick began serving in the church as director of Children and Youth while attending Columbia College. She has served at Centenary (Portsmouth), St. Mark’s (Petersburg), Bridgewater, and St. Luke’s (Yorktown).  She also served as interim pastor at congregations in Clover Hill, Mt. CHESTER – Nearly 40 Amazon associates from two local fulfillment centers visited the Chester Family YMCA June 29 to host more than 100 children for a field day.
