Dedication and loyalty are the two words that come to mind when members of the Chesterfield County Fair Association think of Mary Chalkley. As a life-long resident of the area, Mary’s roots are well established in Chesterfield. Mary Perkinson Chalkley was born in 1937, the tenth of eleven children born to Daniel and Annie Perkinson. She was raised on a farm in Matoaca, attended Ettrick Elementary School, and graduated from Thomas Dale High School in 1955. Mary’s mom was a 4-H leader for 38 years, oversaw 4-H displays at the fair, and fostered Mary’s association with the fair. One year…

Long-time Chester resident, Elton Rutherford Beverly died after a brief illness at CJW hospital on April 29, with his wife by his side. In the late 1970s Elton Rutherford Beverly was not only a fan of the arts, but especially the performing arts. He was active with the John Rolfe Players, a local theatre group, based in Chester. He recently contributed funds to the building of the Chesterfield Center for the Arts and purchased a seat that is inscribed JRP Member & Actor. Miss Chesterfield uses her crown to promote anti-bullying message Athlete, student, beauty queen, survivor, fighter, leader, winner; select any of these descriptions and they will describe Taylor Reynolds. Twenty-one-year-old Reynolds was crowned Miss Chesterfield on January 10 and will be representing Chesterfield in the Miss Virginia 2016 pageant in June. On February 2, 2016 Virginia Parents for Medical Marijuana will hold a Press Conference at 11:15 am in front of the Virginia General Assembly Building in Richmond.   The group, composed of parents and their children with intractable epilepsy, will be in Richmond to lobby members of the Assembly in support of Senate Bill (SB) 701, “Cannabidiol oil and THC-A oil; permitting of pharmaceutical processors to manufacture and provide.” The group was successful last year in helping to pass Senator Dave Marsden’s bill, SB1235 and Delegate Dave Albo’s bill, HB1445 which provided an affirmative defense to patients with intractable epilepsy taking Cannabidiol oil (CBD)…

Local business woman and banker, Lee Taylor, has worked for 43 years in the banking business. Last Thursday was a testimony to her service and commitment in the community banking system when friends, customers and former bosses came together for a retirement party at Brock’s BBQ in Chester. She had no idea of the surprise while being escorted in by Paul Carnes and said it was the best she has ever had. “I have the best friends in the world,” she said. “I love them all.” Jim Brock organized the party. Painting with oils has been one of Mildred Shockey’s greatest pleasures. Shockey was 60 years old when she told her friend and former neighbor, artist Joe Kiffmeyer after receiving one of his watercolors as a gift, that she would do anything to be able to create art like he did. “’If you want to do it you can do it,’ he told me” said Shockey. “He said, ‘You have to want to do it.
