Michelle Seay Knight, 51, was born Dec. 23, 1966. A Chesterfield resident, she went to be with the Lord on Sept. 5, 2018. Knight was preceded in death by her parents, Emmet and Leona Seay, and her adopted daughter, Tasha Jones. She is survived by her fiance, Robbie Jimerson; daughters Erica Cowan (Chad), Stacy Culley and Kayla Fitz; grandkids Emily, Liam and Abagail; sisters Sandra Hayes, Sherry Glover, Susie Haga and Betsy Peregoy; and lots of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who are family.

Nathalia Douthit Betzold Church, 93, died on Sept. 13, 2018. She was born in Ardmore, Ala., resided in Philadelphia, Pa., Richmond, Va., Brentwood, Tenn., Huntsville, Ala., and Cumming, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Betzold Jr. and Clifford Church; parents, Bessie and Howard Douthit; five sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her daughters, Betsy Betzold Holmes and Brenna Betzold Cottongim (Paul), and granddaughters, Nathalia Holmes, Jacklyn Cottongim and Samantha Cottongim. A memorial service was held at Cornerstone Christian Church in Cumming, Ga., on Sept. 22, 2018.

Chesterfield County police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred in the 8600 block of River Road in the Matoaca district at about 1:40 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. Police said a vehicle was traveling on River Road when it went off the road to the right and overturned, ejecting the driver. William Cody Johnson, 25, of the 6400 block of River Road, was pronounced dead at the scene. The preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, and Johnson was not wearing a seat belt.

The Chesterfield County Police Department is partnering with the Chesterfield Food Bank to bring a comprehensive services fair to the community. Several organizations will participate in the fair, which is called H.O.P.E., Helping Others Pursue Excellence. Some of the participating organizations include: Department of Motor Vehicles; Drive2Work; Chesterfield Employment Center; Women, Infants and Children program; Chesterfield County Health Department; CCHASM, Chesterfield Assessment and Resource team; and Chesterfield County Public Schools. Chesterfield County Police Capt. T.O. McCullough was among the 228 law enforcement officers who graduated from the FBI National Academy Program on Sept. 13. Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy Program, held at the FBI Academy at Quantico, offers 10 weeks of advanced communication, leadership and fitness training for selected officers having proven records as professionals within their agencies. CHESTERFIELD — Are you interested in training that will better prepare you for disasters and emergencies? Chesterfield County’s popular Community Emergency Response Team training is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Oct. 2. The initial training course teaches basic emergency response skills that are essential in the critical moments after a disaster, before first responders arrive. A former L.C. Bird High School student who was found not guilty of a related murder charge in May was sentenced Sept. 11 to five years in the state Department of Corrections for two marijuana distribution charges. Tomarr A. Brash, 19, was sentenced to five years on each felony, with two years and six months suspended for each. The sentences — for distributing marijuana and doing so within 1,000 feet of a school — will run consecutively. This CSX rail car at the Curtis Street crossing in Chester is related to a grain spill that occurred in the area on or around Aug. 15 due a mechanical failure, according to a CSX representative and media reports. CSX is scrapping the rail car and removing grain on the tracks “as the availability of crews and equipment allows.” No other information was available.
