Man charged with homicide for 2016 motel slaying

CHESTERFIELD – A man has been arrested in connection with the September 2016 murder of Jerry V. Colyer. At about 10:57 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, police responded to the Econo Lodge at 2310 Indian Hill Road for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, police located the clerk, identified as Jerry Vadal Colyer, 43, of the 2700 block of Haden Avenue in Richmond, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. April Hutchison loves helping people. She got the opportunity to do just that when the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office decided to hire a re-entry coordinator over a year ago. Hutchison, who had been a stay-at-home mom for a year and a dispatcher and customer service rep for a local trucking company for 14 years before that, jumped at the chance. A friend who was then an employee of the sheriff’s office told her about the new position. Police arrest robbery suspect

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY – Police have arrested a man who allegedly robbed the Car Stop Food Mart located at 7431 Jefferson Davis Highway at about 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27. No one was injured during the incident. Police said the man approached the clerk and passed a note demanding money. The man allegedly fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money belonging to the business. There was no weapon displayed during the incident. New police chief has vision for police athletic league

A neighbor provided some of the impetus for Chesterfield’s new police chief to choose law enforcement as a career field. Jeffery Katz, who started Jan. 2, recalled how one of his childhood mentors who lived next door influenced his life. The man, who was an undercover agent with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, taught Katz how to cut grass and build things out of wood. Police investigating Harrowgate convenience store robbery
