CHESTER – A March 28 incident near Virginia State University resulted in the Chesterfield NAACP’s legal redress committee hosting a press conference last week at Chester Library. Committee chairman Tavorise Marks called the press conference to protest the treatment of 21-year-old James Monk, who was pepper sprayed twice and Tased once after failing to comply with police officers’ orders. Monk was detained so that police could search the vehicle he was driving after an officer said he smelled a “strong odor” of marijuana. CHESTERFIELD — Stephen C. Neal, 51, of Key Deer Drive in Chesterfield, was arrested last week and charged with one count of carnal knowledge of an inmate. The incident is alleged to have occured with a woman March 5 while Neal was serving as a deputy sheriff and on duty assigned to the jail. The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office immediately conducted an internal investigation that concluded with Neal’s termination. Concurrently, the Sheriff’s Office requested the Chesterfield Police Department conduct a criminal investigation which resulted in the charge. Chesterfield Police are searching for a missing man who was last seen at about 12 a.m. Sunday, May 20. Douglas E. Burwell Jr., of the 6000 block of Gatesgreen Drive, was last seen by his girlfriend. She reported that Burwell had asked her to go on a walk, but he left the residence first; when she attempted to follow him, he told her to return to the house. She then returned to the residence. When Burwell had not returned home by about 6 p.m. on May 20, she called police. Burwell, 42, is described as a black male, about 6…

Police are asking for the public’s help in solving a five-year-old suspected homicide. Matthew McDaniel was found lying in the 5300 block of Pembroke Street near an intersection with Brampton Way on May 11, 2013. According to police, he died around 12:45 a.m. that day. Jim Munksgard, an investigator with Chesterfield police’s unsolved major investigations unit, and supervisor Kevin Helton are looking for those with information about the incident to come forward. Two five-month-old children died Thursday after police found them in a vehicle at Maisonette Apartments. Chesterfield police responded at 2:29 p.m. May 10 to the apartments in the 2400 block of Alfalfa Lane just east of Jefferson Davis Highway in the Bensley area, a press release states. Chesterfield County Fire and EMS transported the children to Chippenham Hospital, where one was pronounced dead and the other died several hours later. Police Maj. CHESTERFIELD– The Chesterfield County Police Department is investigating the death of an unidentified man whose body was discovered in the area of the 4800 block of Ridgedale Parkway Tuesday, May 8. At about 6:40 p.m. May 8, police responded to a report of a body found in a wooded area. The body was transported to the office of the chief medical examiner. Police continue their investigation, but foul play is not suspected. At about 10:30 a.m. May 5, Chesterfield officers responded to a report of a man found deceased in Falling Creek near the 2500 block of Marina Drive. The man has been identified as Edward D. Mendez, 38, of the 2500 block of Marina Drive. Mendez had been reported missing by his family around 11 p.m. May 2. The body was transported to the office of the chief medical examiner. Chesterfield Police are searching for a missing man who was last seen by family on Sunday, April 29. David J. O’Dell, of the 1200 block of Wycliff Court, was last seen by family on the morning of April 29 at his residence. He spoke to a relative via phone at about 6 p.m. on April 29, and said he was leaving his residence to visit a friend. CHESTERFIELD – The Chesterfield County Police Department has released the identity of a man who was killed in the 4900 block of Burnt Oak Drive on Sunday, April 29. Police said Breland O. Poole, 19, of the 3900 block of East Broad Rock Road, was shot multiple times. Poole was transported to a local hospital, where he died. Police continue their investigation into this incident.
