There is a little-known gem in Chesterfield County Public School’s education system and it comes in the form of its Adult Continuing Education program. After working as a GED teacher for three years, Dawn Wells, the Adult Education Program Manager, came into this role five years ago. Student artists learn many skills through their classes. They study form and perspective; colors; light and shadow; and more as they work in various mediums. Art, however, is about more than a set of techniques. It’s about making connections. That’s why class assignments like the Memory Project are so important to the student artists at John Tyler Community College. The Memory Project is an initiative that gives children and teens, from all over the world, who have been abandoned, orphaned, abused or neglected, a personal keepsake. SPORTS: December 6 the CQL football little league went helmet to helmet in the World Series. It was the big game for little league football players last Saturday. Eight teams played beginning at 10 a.m. with the Minors in the Chesterfield Quarterback League Superbowl. The league is celebrating 60 years and is the oldest little league association in the state of Virginia. To celebrate Inclusive Schools Week Dec. 5 through Dec. 9, the faculty at C.C. Wells wore shirts to celebrate being “Unique as a Snowflake.”  Students learned about the accomplishments of talented individuals who overcame the negative aspects of disabilities.  All the students helped decorate the school with snowflakes and displays about  the importance of inclusion and acceptance.

Chester artists are invited to join John Tyler Community College for its twelfth annual “Fool for Art Festival” April 22, 2017. The festival, held at the college’s Midlothian campus, features a variety of art and craft vendors from around the state. Two Chesterfield County Public Schools students won the Virginia War Memorial 2016 Veterans Day Essay Contest, and the students both read their winning essays at the Veterans Day Ceremony Nov. 11 at the Virginia War Memorial. The winner for the middle school category is Jordan Bowe, an eighth-grade student at Matoaca Middle, who wrote an essay titled “Could You Walk in Their Boots.” The high school category winner is Lauren Faherty, an 11th-grade student at Manchester High who wrote “My Family’s Love of America.” The essay contest was open to all public, private, and homeschooled middle and high school students…

ocal HS art student win awards at State Fair Chesterfield County Public Schools students from the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center at Courthouse won numerous awards in the Virginia State Fair Youth Arts and Crafts contest. Nineteen students from Chesterfield County Public Schools entered artwork into the competition. Four students won or tied for first place in their categories in the electronic media portion of the contest, and one student received the Best in Division honor for an original computer illustration. When choosing the fall musical for the current school year, the theater students at Thomas Dale High School’s Specialty Center for the Arts expressed their desire to see more diversity on stage. As a result, the drama instructors went with “The Wiz,” an urban reimagining of L.
