A $350,000 change order for construction of a new Harrowgate Elementary School was approved by the Chesterfield County School Board last week, with news that the building’s gymnasium will be expanded. The new Harrowgate School was to be identical to the new Enon Elementary School. However, the county requested that the gymnasiums at Harrowgate, Ettrick, Crestwood and Reams elementary schools be expanded. Although she’s only been a school a counselor at Hening Elementary for three years, Amirah Bohler has already been named Teacher of the Year. Bohler said she was surprised to receive the award because it is usually given to teachers. “I feel like it’s a testament to the efforts that I made to get to know a lot of our students and know them by name and not just face, and knowing things about their home life and things that make them tick when they’re at school,” she said. Meadowbrook High student Liz Hernandez helped plant broccoli and cabbage at Shalom Farms, 2676 Venita Road, on April 25. She was part of Gwendolyn Goode’s Family and Consumer Science class. Students studied the roles of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration and the importance of good nutrition. “It was such a rewarding experience,” Goode said. Bird High School principal Adrienne Blanton gave a sentimental speech noting this was her first graduating class as a principal. “This group is one of the most active senior classes I’ve ever seen,” she said, as she recognized students who participated in sports, clubs and community service. Goodbyes were part of Thomas Dale High School’s graduation June 5 at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center. Bermuda District county supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle noted that, since she is retiring soon, this is her last year speaking at high school commencement ceremonies. Jaeckle said goodbye and thanked Mark Fowler, whom she called a “great teacher, coach and assistant principal.” Jaeckle said that the 2005 boys soccer team coached by Fowler won the school’s first state championship.
