CHESTERFIELD – Chester resident and Cosby High teacher Anne Canipe has been named the 2016 American Geographical Society Teacher Fellow of the American Geographical Society (AGS). Canipe is one of 50 teachers selected from across the United States to participate in this first-year program. Ms. Canipe teaches Advanced Placement (AP) human geography and World History I honors, as well as medical law and ethics for Cosby High’s Health Science Specialty Center. Meadowbrook High School’s Academy for Digital Entrepreneurship (MADE) sent two teams of five sophomores to compete in the Virginia Entrepreneurial Challenge Oct. 15-16 at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Business. The challenge was a weekend-long entrepreneurship boot camp for high school juniors and seniors. “The students at the MADE program continue to impress me,” said John Erbach, school board member for Dale District. “In terms of their innovation and business skills, they are far ahead of even many college students. With new leadership at the school division level, the Chesterfield County School Board and Superintendent have refocused attention on academic performance at Falling Creek Middle School and Ettrick Elementary School this school year. In an effort to sustain and improve on current three-year trends that show student achievement growth, both schools have been provided with additional staffing and technology support in an effort to meet Virginia’s academic accountability benchmarks. CHESTER – To develop the skills and knowledge needed for careers in electrical engineering technology, hands-on training using industry-standard controls is vital. Now, thanks to a $40,000 gift from Dominion Resources, John Tyler Community College (JTCC) is able to offer its students even more opportunities to learn on state-of-the-art equipment. Families from the Enon Elementary School found out last month in order for their strong desire to have the elementary school prototype design to be implemented on the current school footprint. The existing school will need to be torn down. That demolition work will begin this summer. To accommodate the demolition work and the associated school construction that will begin this summer. Enon Elementary students will be housed on the Marguerite Christian Elementary campus during the 2016-17 school year. There is additional capacity for students at Marguerite Christian, meaning students will be taught in both the main school and trailers.…

Nine Chesterfield County schools are scheduled to participate in the upcoming International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Two are from the Village News readership area, Bellwood Elementary and Elizabeth Davis Middle School. International Walk to School Day raises awareness about the benefits of walking and biking, as well as what its proponents, the Partnership for a Walkable America consider a “need” for safe walking routes to schools. CHESTER – Down to the last few days of summer vacation, parents are making preparations for their children going back to school Tuesday, Sept. 6. The community has offered several back-to-school events with free school supplies to help families that may be struggling to complete their extensive school supply lists. Second Baptist Church at 5100 W. Hundred Rd., opened their doors last Saturday for free school supplies and offered tips for being successful in school with support from community businesses and the police department. The Rev.
