CHESTERFIELD – Grants for 21st-Century Community Learning Centers are making a difference in the lives of Chesterfield County Public Schools students living in the county’s poorest areas. Since 2004, the school system has received more than $8 million to provide targeted remediation and enrichment at 11 schools. The Virginia Department of Education announced this year’s 21st-Century Community Learning Center grants Aug. 4, and Chesterfield County Public Schools won one of the 33 competitive grants awarded in the state. CHESTERFIELD – Reading pass rates on state-mandated Standards of Learning tests continue to increase across Chesterfield County Public Schools, according to 2015-16 school year data released by the Virginia Department of Education. Student pass rates on all reading SOL tests increased another 2 percentage points from the 2014-15 school year and have increased by 7 percentage points since the 2013-14 school year. With an 84 percent pass rate for all students, Chesterfield County Public Schools reading pass rate is 4 percentage points higher than the state average. The communities of Enon Elementary and Beulah Elementary are gathering to help decide how their new school buildings will look. The National School Public Relations Association is honoring Dr. James F. Lane as one of the nation’s Superintendents to Watch. Only 24 school superintendents across  the country were selected, and Dr. Lane is the only Virginia superintendent on the list. The Superintendents to Watch program recognizes educational leaders with fewer than five years experience of the superintendent position who understand that effective communication leads to school and student success. The Southside Virginia Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America recently awarded 14 high school seniors Roper Memorial Scholarships, worth $1,000 each. The scholarships were made possible through a bequest by the late Mrs. Caroline Roper, who asked that her gift be used in some way to honor the sacrifice, courage, and dedication of members of the Armed Forces in defense of our nation.  To fulfill that request, the Southside Virginia Chapter established the Roper Memorial Scholarship for children and grandchildren of currently serving and retired military service members without regard to rank of the person sponsoring the applicant.…
