The Chesterfield County Police Department announced today that this year’s Craig Rath Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to a Grange Hall Elementary School student. Chesterfield County Police Maj. K.C. Carr and Child Safety Officer Diane Pongallo surprised Ashley Henderson with the award in front of her parents and peers during the school’s fifth-grade celebration, which took place at Cosby High School. Ashley received a $250 check and a letter from Col. Thierry G. Dupuis, along with a certificate in memory of Officer Craig Rath. Alice Robinson was nominated as an Outstanding Volunteer. She accumulated 1,194 hours after age 60, and she taught for 39 years. Ms. Robinson volunteers her time and talents with Chesterfield County Public Schools, where she helps struggling readers feel successful. At Curtis Elementary, she tutored individual first graders reading below grade level and set up a checkout system for books in the reading room. Now at Harrowgate Elementary, she continues individual tutoring with first graders. She schedules her physical therapy sessions around her volunteering schedule so as not to disappoint the children. Elizabeth Davis Middle School (EDMS) is pretty excited about its summer reading program. “Let Me Take a Shelfie,” which includes taking pictures of the reader while doing what? Well, reading of course. Susan Worsham-Moore and Emily McDaniel, librarians at EDMS, are pretty hyped about the new program. “This is our first big kickoff for the summer reading program,” Worsham-Moore said. McDaniel shared that the program has a whole new outlook. “They have to take pictures of themselves reading in certain settings,” she said. “Then they have to send them to us all during the summer so they can be eligible…

Students from Salem Church Middle School participated in their first annual “bridging the gap” event this year, where volunteer students refurbished computers and donated them to families in need. Virginia STAR (Student Training and Refurbishment Program) receives impaired computers each year from state government agencies, in hopes of having students refurbish these computers and donate them to families without a computer in their home. This was the first year that Salem Church middle participated in this statewide event. More than 20 students volunteered their own time after school to refurbish these computers. Chesterfield County principals presented some 4,300 high school diplomas at VCU’s Siegel Center during graduation week, June 9 through June 13. The series of convocations is the last for Superintendent Marcus Newsome, who will be taking a new leadership role at Petersburg City Public Schools as superintendent on July 1. Dr. Newsome will hand the reins to Dr. James F. Lane, the newly hired Superintendent. There is still space in Chesterfield County Public Schools for 4-year-olds eligible for prekindergarten for the 2016-17 school year. Chesterfield County Public Schools offers a limited number of prekindergarten spots in 20 schools to provide school-readiness skills to eligible children with the greatest need. Children who will be four years old by Sept. 30 and who are zoned for a school that offers prekindergarten can apply. There are no exceptions to age and residency requirements.
