The Matoaca High School Performing Arts program will present a series of spring concerts. All concerts will take place in the school auditorium. Admission is $5 and tickets will be available at the door. The Matoaca High choirs under the direction of Brad Berkley will present a concert May 19 at 7 p.m. Performing groups include the award winning Up Front and High Impact show choirs. Virginia State University’s Hospitality Management Department is offering a summer bridge program for high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing a career in the hospitality management industry, including hotel and restaurant management, travel agencies, cruise lines, event planning, casinos and more. Sponsored by Hyatt Hotels Corporation, a leading global hospitality company based in Chicago, the program will be held on the VSU campus June 20 through June 22. The theme for 2015-2016 at Ettrick Elementary in Chesterfield this year is “Super Heroes.” Utilizing this theme, third grade teachers Maria MacLaughlin and Lynne Johnson applied for a Community in Schools Cynthia Henshaw Grant. The detailed outline included components for each content area. The grant was awarded and third grade students began their super adventure. The teachers named their project “I am a Super Hero!” Third Grade students would be tasked to design, create, and develop a super hero that exemplifies a positive trait they find within themselves. Members of the Matoaca High School American Red Cross Club and their family and friends volunteered on Saturday, April 23, at the Virginia Home 5K Fun Walk. This is the seventh year the 5K Fun Walk has taken place and the MHS American Red Cross Club has volunteered each time. The Virginia Home is a private, non-profit that provides nursing, therapeutic and residential care to adult Virginians with irreversible disabilities. Members of the club teamed up with different residents to assist them in the walk by: helping push their wheelchairs, guiding them around the course at beautiful Bird Park and…

Carver Middle School’s seventh grade class, to promote healthy lifestyles and to associate fun with fitness, will offer its first annual “I’d Rather Be Crazy than Lazy Challenge” on May 11. Activities will include “Minute-To-Win-It” events, fitness and local history trivia, and 30 second “Road Block” exercises involving all areas of fitness. There is no cost (free for all ages.) Carver students and faculty ask that you please come out and join them for some crazy fun at Carver Middle School on Harrowgate Road, 3800 Cougar Trail, Chester,which will take place from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Nathan Hoback has been named 2016 Matoaca High School Teacher of the Year. Mr. Hoback, a worthy recipient of this recognition is well known to students and faculty at Matoaca High School. Originally from Roanoke, Virginia, Mr. Hoback earned his undergraduate and Masters from William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is certified to teach Spanish and Mathematics. He has been a member of the Matoaca High School faculty for five years and his current teaching assignments are Spanish 1 and Algebra II.
