Thomas Dale High sophomores in Fran Martin’s PE class spent two weeks learning archery this spring. This is the second year Martin has incorporated archery into the curriculum. She is certified through the National Archery in the Schools Program, coordinated locally through the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The department also loaned Thomas Dale High the bows, arrows and other archery equipment for students to use.

Employment trends are rapidly moving away from established corporations with 30-year retirement plans to boutique businesses of a smaller workforce and employee shifting from job to job to a different type of career – self employment and entrepreneurship. Chesterfield County parents can now get information via Twitter if school buses are delayed. The school system’s five area offices for transportation started tweeting today, the first day after spring break. Each area transportation office plans to tweet as soon as possible if a bus is running late by 15 minutes or more either picking students up in the morning or returning students to their bus stops in the afternoon. Deborah Floyd, Stephanie Stargardt and Joshua Forbes from G. W. Carver Middle School are the recipients of the 2016 American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Collaborative School Library Award for their collaborative project “Brotherhood, A Novel: Making Connections to Richmond from Reconstruction Through Present Day.” Sponsored by Upstart, the $2,500 award recognizes school librarian and teacher collaboration during the development and implantation of a curriculum-supporting program using school library resources. They did it! Enon Elementary students read one million minutes and their principals stayed true to their word with a promise to dye their hair blue and gold, the school’s colors, during an assembly. The goal was for students to participate in a nightly reading assignment under the guidance of their mascot’s motto for reading “Gators Gobble Books,” reading 20 minutes each evening. The students reached their one million minutes goal during the second grading period. It was an evening packed full of fun for the Ecoff students, community family, and teachers during last Friday’s celebration of  25 years in the community.  Principal Dr. Josh Cole said, “We have been really blessed, our teachers and community have worked so well together over 25 years.”

Members of Matoaca High School Future Business Leaders of America recently volunteered their time and service at the Chesterfield Food Bank, located on Iron Bridge Road in Chester. This event was organized by Austin Sutherland, chapter secretary and was a huge success. The representatives at the food bank were very appreciative of FBLA’s efforts in this endeavor. Members agreed that it was a humbling experience to help others in need by giving back to the community. Mr. Cassein Carter, chapter adviser, attended the event and praised the volunteers for their commitment to serving their community.

The students worked since November practicing day after day to be ready for their big show. “The kids put in a lot of hours to give a quality show,” Martha Holland Stanley, head of Theatre Department, and director of the play, at Beth Davis Middle School said. Stanley said approximately 50 students participated this year in making the production of the “The Lion King, Jr” a success. “Auditions begin in October and the cast is chosen,” Stanley said. “Then it’s a lot of work; we have practices almost every day.” It’s a bit commitment to perform in the play.
