The Chesterfield County School Board announced today its unanimous selection of Goochland County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. James F. Lane, a former Chesterfield County school administrator, as the next superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools. Lane’s appointment, which is scheduled to be voted on tonight by the School Board, is effective July 1. Superintendent in Goochland since 2012, Lane recently was named the 2016 Region 1 Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents and is a finalist for the 2017 Virginia Superintendent of the Year. Elementary students from Chesterfield County Public Schools will demonstrate enthusiastic problem-solving and teamwork during STEAMmania 8 a.m.-1 p.m. March 19 at the Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 W. Broad St. in Richmond. STEAM (which stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math) has exploded across Chesterfield County Public Schools, causing the annual STEAM fair to split into two events: STEAMmania on March 19 and an April 9 event for middle and high school students. Megan Stith from Thomas Dale High School is honored as a semi-finalist in the Forty-seventh annual national Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship Competition. The prestigious awards are granted to high school seniors for the best all around presentations including an explanation of why they are planning careers in government service. The Foundation noted that these students represent the most talented and accomplished of our country’s young leaders and that it is these young men and women who are dedicating themselves to public service. A night of honor, service brings together JROTC classes As part of the National Defense Act of 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the creation of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC.) According to Chesterfield County Public Schools budget documents, funding for the 2016-17 school year, totaling $600 million, marks the first time that investment in public education has reached prerecession levels. However, Superintendant Dr. Marcus J. Newsome said there is still work to be done. The CCPS budget passed last week by the School Board includes operating costs which will add an additional 28 teaching positions identified in the five-year budget plan. Creativity courses through Jess Hellerstein’s veins. Her love of art has been a constant in her life, which has been full of art-themed birthday parties, after-school art projects, and a myriad of classes that allowed her to explore mediums ranging from jewelry-making to ceramics and stained glass to pastels and graphic design. Although Hellerstein enjoyed expressing herself in a multitude of ways, she found herself particularly drawn to digital art. In 2014, the Chesterfield resident started taking classes at John Tyler Community College. In her classes, Hellerstein explores her “creative self” as she refines her skills and creates new works.…

Throughout central Virginia, April 14 is the date to register children for kindergarten. Kindergarten is a full-day program offered in every Chesterfield County elementary school. A child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30 to attend kindergarten. Every Chesterfield County elementary school will register incoming kindergartners 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. April 14, so parents should take their children to the elementary school they are zoned to attend. Can you believe it is the 100th day of school already? On Feb. 24, kindergartners at Wells Elementary marked the day by wearing shirts that featured 100 items of some sort and working on hands-on STEM projects involving 100 items. STEM = science, technology, engineering and math.

The Matoaca High School Show choirs under the direction of Brad Berkley competed in the Mid Atlantic Show Choir Spectacular hosted by Clover Hill High School Saturday February 20. The choirs both produced stellar performances and placed in their respective categories. The girls choir, Up Front, received first runner-up in the unisex division. The mixed choir, High Impact, received Grand Champion in their division in preliminary rounds and finished second runner-up in finals. The show choir band won best band in the unisex and mixed division.
