The Matoaca Fine and Performing Arts department hosted a Faculty and Alumni talent show on Feb. 18.  Faculty acts included Mrs. Lasmith and Mrs. Hudson who sang the duet “Count on Me” and Mr. John White who presented a great ventriloquist act. Mr. Britt played an amazing gospel piano solo. Alumni acts included Katelyn McCarter (2007) Beth Hoover (2010), Derek Kelly (2012), Tyler Thrasher, Andre Mollineau and Jaylin Brown (2013), Miles Hicks and Kaetwan Crenshaw (2014). Miles and Kaetwan are also the choreographers for the award winning Matoaca girls show choir Up Front.

Each year, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards honor the creative abilities of middle and high school students throughout the country. This year in regional competition, Chesterfield County student achieved a total of 110 Gold Keys, 196 Silver Keys and 298 honorable mentions. Because there is not a central Virginia competition, Chesterfield students compete in the Southeast region at large, which covers several states. Gold Key winners go on to national competition; national winners will be announced March 14 and honored in a New York City ceremony. When students arrived at school last Wednesday at Curtis Elementary, they noticed their teachers were wearing mouse ears and some even had painted whiskers on their face. When they were questioned, their teachers said it was a special day and they were all in for a big surprise at the end of the day. The build-up for the students was the kick-off for “Curtis Reads,” a celebration intended to bring together their school and families to share the love of reading. Will Zerull, Sales Manager for Haley Ford, and Beverly Hamme, Office Manager for Haley Ford, walked into Thomas Dale High School 9th Grade Campus with a big check Monday night. They delivered a $6,000 check to the TDHS Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) for their participation and success in Ford Motor Company “Drive 4UR School” program. This was the second time the PTSA signed up for the program and both times succeeded in receiving the maximum payout. It was a regular meeting night for PTSA. At Virginia Commonwealth University during a Jan. 7 pinning ceremony for National Board Certified Teachers, two additional Chesterfield County educators were honored: Elizabeth Lucas, who teaches English at Bird High School, received the 2016 Dr. Judy Flythe Teacher Leader Award. Given by the Center for Teacher Leadership in VCU’s School of Education, this award honors a teacher who demonstrates deep understanding of the teaching and learning process and works with colleagues to improve instruction. The Woman’s Club of Chester invites all youth, 12 through 14 years of age, to submit an original 250-word essay on the subject “What It Means To Me To Be An American Citizen.” The essay should include the feelings and beliefs of the writer. Essays will be judged on content, originally and presentation (typed and neat). MEGA Mentors’, a group that teaches life skills, provides meaningful learning experiences and builds leadership skills through mentoring and tutoring in underrepresented Chesterfield County Public School students will host an arts benefit this Friday. “MEGA Mentors is a vital partnership between caring adults and Chesterfield County students,” said Bermuda School Board Member Carrie Coyner. “Mentors provide our students with opportunities to learn soft skills improve academics and boost self esteem and character.
