Area seniors are approaching the end of the first nine weeks of their final year in high school. While sophomore and junior classes were taking PSAT exams last Wednesday at Matoaca High School, the senior class had Senior Empowerment Day; attending forums and a social to discover opportunities for them after graduation. Tiara Broaddus, interning in her final semester at Virginia Commonwealth University, earning a degree in counseling, organized the successful event for the 438 seniors. “All presenters followed-thru and attended,” said Broaddus. “The feedback has been good from the students, the presenters and the vendors.” Broaddus considered the senior…

Matoaca High celebrated recently the school’s 52nd anniversary with homecoming festivities including crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen. The senior class selected as their king and queen Justin Dyke and Taylor Thomas-Harris, two outstanding Matoaca student leaders. Justin is a varsity football and soccer player and senior class vice president. He is a member of the Warrior Broadcast Network program, the FBLA and Key Clubs and serves on the Chesterfield Public Schools Superintendent’s Advisory Council. The Arbor Day Foundation has designated Virginia State University (VSU) as a Tree Campus USA. This national designation honors colleges and universities for promoting healthy urban forest management and engaging the campus in environmental stewardship. To receive Tree Campus USA status, VSU had to meet five core standards of tree care and community engagement: Establishment of a campus tree advisory committee; evidence of a campus tree-care plan; Verification of dedicated annual expenditures on the campus tree-care plan; involvement in an Arbor Day observance; and creation of a service-learning project aimed at engaging students. Matoaca High School’s canine companion dog, Zach, marked his last official day of work last week after six-and-a half years of faithful service. In his honor the Exceptional Education Department held a retirement  party with food, photos, hugs and farewell messages for Zach from faculty and students as he heads off for a much deserved retirement. Zach was placed with Ms. Penny Edwards, a Matoaca High School faculty member in 2008 by Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) a national nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of children and adults with disabilities by providing highly-trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to…
