First Omar Howard and Madison Day were Trojans. Then they became Spiders. The two athletes journeys started on the same field and now their paths have crossed again. Now they are preparing for a giant game as Richmond takes on James Madison. This year’s rendition should be an epic battle with all of the fixings. For starters, the game will be the sixth BCS game ever featured on ESPN’s College Game Day. Coming into the contest, the Dukes are ranked #4 in the nation while the Spiders come in at #11. “We won’t see any of it, when we get there it…

Smaller schools thrive off multi-sport athletes. In the past, Matoaca was a small school, a tiny one – not always the 5A school they are today. These athletes make up a significant part of the school’s history and a change from the Wing-T to the spread has a few of these talented athletes on display. “You’re not going to find an area with too many more generational families in the county,” Matoaca’s football coach, Derrick L. Johnson said. “We still have homegrown Matoaca boys here.” Homegrown Matoaca boys that play multiple sports, or more uniquely, three skill players who would…

Meadowbrook 21, Matoaca 14 In what was perhaps one of the most thrilling games of the weekend, Meadowbrook (3-4) knocked off Matoaca (5-2) on the strength of two key turnovers and a last-second goal line stand. Running the wildcat with Jamison Harrison at quarterback most of the fourth quarter, Matoaca trailed 21-14, and drove to the one-yard line with 45 seconds left. On the Warriors’ last attempt at the end zone, defensive tackle Michael Crewe Jr. burst through the line for the Monarchs and Kevin Williams made the tackle to secure the Monarch’s third victory of the season. Meadowbrook was…

1. L.C. Bird 7-0 Cosby kept things interesting for a while in this game scoreboard wise, but were never really that close to scratching the armor of L.C. Bird. The Titans do get a feather in their cap for trailing by two scores deep into the fourth quarter, and for also, scoring on the vaunted Skyhawks first team defense. Otherwise, the game was business-as-usual for the Skyhawks who should cruise into the postseason with a 10-0 record with three extremely winnable games in George Wythe, Huguenot and James River. They should also cruise to the top seed in the 5A…

While everyone may deserve a second chance, not everyone gets one. A former Thomas Dale running back had to break more than tackles in his high school career, battling adversity to triumph on the field. As a senior with a nagging ankle injury, he rushed for 1,010 yards and caught the eyes of college recruiters. Like many Knights backs before him, he was destined for a scholarship. There was one missing ingredient – grades. Finney did not meet the NCAA’s academic requirements to play college sports. However, an opportunity for redemption is knocking and Finney has answered. He’s getting his…

C.J. Reavis has found plenty of college interest at Eastern Mississippi after being dismissed from Virginia Tech. Per his twitter account, a “monster” has been created, and he’s been playing like one. Reavis has 23 tackles, six pass break-ups and two interceptions, one that went for a touchdown. First to offer Reavis was West Virginia University, and last Wednesday, the Iowa State Cyclones extended an offer. The former Thomas Dale standout figures to continue to attract attention from more major programs before committing a third time.

L.C. Bird linebacker Isaiah Moore (6-2, 210) has picked up his first offer from Old Dominion University. The junior made varsity as a sophomore and earned a starting position, improving as the season went along, stepping up big in the postseason, especially against Salem (Virginia Beach) in the state semi-finals. This season, Moore has 33 tackles, five for a loss, two sacks, a forced fumble, three recovered fumbles, two interceptions, a pass deflection and a blocked kick. This should be the first of several offers to come for Moore.

Speaking of offers, former Matoaca wideout and current Trinity Episcopal receiver Trevion Armstrong announced his college commitment at Trinity’s homecoming game last Friday. He’ll be playing his college football at the University of Nevada, the Wolfpack. Armstrong transferred along with quarterback Blake Bowen after the 2013 season. He fielded many offers, but chose Nevada out of a final four that included Pittsburgh, Illinois and Toledo.

Thomas Dale 28, Dinwiddie 13 The Knights’ defense rose to the occasion, defeating the Generals 28-13 on Saturday afternoon at Ed Karpus field. Thomas Dale jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Dinwiddie punter Joseph Tyree’s knee touched the ground on a kick. Matt Lawton ran a QB sneak to give the Knights a lead. Dinwiddie answered, with a six-yard run by Tye Freeland to tie the score at 7-7. Led by primarily the passing game in this contest, the Knights would stretch the lead out to as much as 28-7 on a pair of touchdowns by Brian Bullock (one…

1. L.C. Bird (6-0) The idle Skyhawks enjoyed a bye week, and have a favorable schedule the rest of the regular season. The biggest potential obstacle is this Friday’s game at Cosby, slated to kick-off at 7:30, but a Titans offense that’s struggled to score at times will have a hard time scoring on the best defense in the state. The other teams remaining on L.C. Bird’s schedule will likely provide little resistance as well, as George Wythe, James River, and Huguenot have combined for a 3-15 record in 2015. What’s important here is that L.C. Bird played well through…
