A defensive end and tight end for Matoaca, Benjamin White has received his second college offer, this one coming from Hiram College in Ohio. While it’s not an official scholarship offer, as Division III schools do not have athletic scholarships, it is the offer of a roster spot should White attend the school. At 6-1 and 215 pounds, White provides a projectable and strong frame and the ability to be versatile. Following a recent L.C. Bird honoree, Thomas Dale got one of its own honors from the Great American Rivalry series for excellence in academics and athletes. Senior Corrin Gabbard was honored this past week. A two sport athlete at Thomas Dale,who plays both football and baseball, Gabbard has slowly grown his role on both fields. Former Thomas Dale basketball standoutVernon Hamilton has extended his career further, signing on as the assistant to the head coach at LSU under former VCU coach Will Wade.  Hamilton played three seasons with the Knights alongside fellow standout Brad Byerson. Hamilton would eventually transfer to Benedictine and head to Clemson, while Byerson started his college career at West Virginia. A star on the court for Thomas Dale, guard Kylon Lewis registered his second college offer this past week when Concord University extended it. At 6-4 and 170 pounds, Lewis was phenomenal for the Knights during the 2019-20 season. His talent helped the team to its first regional title in 19 years and a state tournament appearance. Lewis averaged 15.9 points and 3.1 assists per game. Lewis was also on the 2018-19 Knights team that won just five games. When Kevin Healy took the football coaching job at Meadowbrook this year, he knew he’d be in for a challenge. After two months on the job, COVID-19 hit, pushing practices, workouts, and the season back. Despite that, there’s light at the end of the tunnel for a program which has faced many challenges. “The program is in a full rebuild,” Healy said. “We are teaching the basics in the weight room, in accountability. Matoaca’s Devin Bailey has seen his recruitment heat up in recent times. In fact, this past week, he picked up two new offers, both from in-state schools. Virginia State and Christopher Newport are interested in the athlete’s services. “Devin can be a very good college football player,” said coach Jay Parker. “He plays a lot of positions for us, [he] is versatile and dependable, and [he] has good grades in the classroom as well.” Bailey’s versatility on the field has led him to line up at quarterback, wide receiver, and his primarily position, defensive back. L.C. Bird linebacker Jaden Casey is still awaiting his first scholarship offer, but it could be coming soon. Casey received a high academic honor from the Great American Rivalry Series as a scholar athlete. An award for academics comes as no surprise, as Casey has a 4.5 grade point average, something that college coaches will surely drool over. As L.C. Bird alum Rayshard Ashby gets ready to take the field for his senior season for Virginia Tech, he’ll do so with a litany of preseason honors and awards. Athlon Sports named him a preseason All-American last week, in addition to him being announced as a team captain for the Hokies.
