Another leader from the gridiron at L.C. Bird has developed into a leader at the college level. Linebacker Isaiah Moore was named a team captain for North Carolina State on Sunday. Moore was a 5A state champion at L.C. Bird, and he joined teammate Rayshard Ashby in heading to the ACC after getting tons of college offers. The redshirt junior enjoyed a rock-solid junior year, racking up 53 tackles and two sacks, including a ten-tackle outburst against Syracuse. The Wolfpack finished the 2019 season at 4-8, but the team wants tom take a big leap forward in 2020. That will…

L.C. Bird and Notre Dame alum Jalen Elliott was cut two weeks ago by the Detroit Lions, but was immediately added to their 17-man practice squad. The act of Elliott being cut was a signal that the undrafted free agent didn’t make the Lions’ roster out of the preseason, but he’s close to making his NFL debut. Other area athletes such as Ant Harris (L.C. Bird/UVA) and Brandian Ross (Meadowbrook/Youngstown State) were both practice squad players before making NFL active rosters. Elliott was a part of a 5A state championship team at L.C. Bird, and he eventually worked his way…

Another L.C. Bird football player made headlines, but his shot at stardom at the college level will have to wait. Virginia Tech announced that the wide receiver would have leg surgery. After impressing Hokies head coach Justin Fuente in practices leading up the season, Payoute seemed prime to get playing time early in his college career. In high school, Payoute was one of the most athletic players L.C. Bird had to offer. It was his speed on the track that brought an explosion in his recruiting before he chose Virginia Tech. TechSideline.com reporter Cory Van Dyke wrote of the news…

Rising senior Jeremiah Wilks has seen an uptick of interest in his services over the last couple of months. He tallied four offers: from Indiana Tech, Alderson Broaddus, Missouri Valley, and Central Methodist. “Wilks is a very determined athlete,” said L.C. Bird track coach Adam Canning. “I believe he is willing to put everything into being great. He is the type of kid who will be the first one at practice working on hurdles and the last to leave after the workout to work on hurdles some more.” That work ethic has certainly attracted the attention of colleges and produced…

In his first Indianapolis 500, spotter and Thomas Dale graduate Jesse Vaughan posted a quality performance along with his driver, James Henchcliffe. The Andretti racing team and driver placed seventh in the historic race.  “It was unreal.  The first day I was nervous before we got on track, but once ‘Hinch’ got out there it was business as usual,” Vaughan said. “He was really easy to work with, and the Andretti guys were very accommodating.  It was odd being on that huge property with no fans, but it was still the 500.” “I learned a lot and after every day…

One of the hottest names in the area for recruiting, Kris Trinidad’s of L.C. Bird has attracted 13 scholarship offers, with the University of Richmond and Sacred Heart being the latest. Trinidad, praised by coach Troy Taylor for his work ethic, offers a huge, expandable frame at 6-6, 210 pounds and has an excellent “old school” mentality. In fact, the rising senior is so “old school” that he didn’t even have a social media account until he began getting recruited this past spring. As for the other eleven schools on his list thus far, they include Air Force, Army, Bryant,…

Four Matoaca football players made waves on the recruiting newswire over the past week. The headliner was a commitment from Jalen Bailey to Virginia State after a successful prep year at Fork Union Military Academy. While the season for Virginia State is uncertain with COVID-19, Matoaca football coach said that Jalen would be physically ready after a year of prep at Fork Union. Jalen’s path to college football took an unexpected turn as he tore his ACL prior to his senior season. After a successful rehab of the injury, he completed a year at Fork Union and earned a scholarship.…

Brycen Blaine is a guard for L.C. Bird boys basketball. Moreso, Blaine is yet another Skyhawk that seemed destined to play college basketball. This past week, he was offered by Livingstone College. “The sky’s the limit for Bryce,” said L.C. Bird coach Troy Manns. “He’s a fun young man to be around because of his competitive nature. He works hard and should have a really good season this year.” Blaine was a force for L.C. Bird all season long in what was a balanced attack of youthful players. With just one senior on the roster in Tyler Henderson, Blaine was…

Chester man to spot at Indy 500 Jesse Vaughan, a Chester native and Thomas Dale Class of 2003 graduate, is a UPS employee by day. At night, he is a father to Caleb, 7, and Wyatt, 3, as well as a husband to Mindy (Thomas Dale Class of 2004). On paper, Vaughan may seem ordinary, but it’s how he spends his weekends that could rev your engines. In a little more than a week, Vaughan will serve as a spotter for James Hinchcliffe of Andretti Racing at the Indianapolis 500. “I’m a huge history fan and a huge racing fan,”…
