Meadowbrook High recently announced the newest addition to their coaching staff with Sam Bryant taking the helm of the boys’ basketball program. “I’ve been in the hallways. I’ve been over there,” Bryant said. “The best thing about those hallways is that they are filled with tall and athletic basketball players.” Bryant, a Benedictine Preparatory graduate, played under Warren Rutledge. After a season at Camden Military prep school in South Carolina, he went on to play collegiately at Newberry College. As a coach, he has spent the last 15 seasons at Armstrong High School as an assistant under coach Daryl Watts.…

L.C. Bird High School’s basketball program is no stranger to developing college prospects. From the days of Chuck Tester to Chevette Waller’s success with the girls’ basketball program, Chuck Thomas to Troy Manns, athlete after athlete has signed on the dotted line. Although there have been mega recruits such as Taja Cole (Louisville/Georgia) and Kenny Williams (North Carolina), there have been many Division II and Division III recruits as well. Rising senior Jamon “Doc” Battle’s stock has steadily risen, as he’s collected 15 offers during recent times. The athletic guard has a cornucopia of mid-major offers, most recently from Longwood…

To those alive in the late 1960s and ‘70s, chances are the jingle “Go Speed Racer, go Speed Racer, go!” may be familiar. Speed Racer appeared in comics and on television and was a success in both Japan and in the United States, and even spawned a 2008 film. Cory Rogers, a 15-year-old student at L.C. Bird High School, is trying his best to give Chester its own version of the cartoon star. Rogers doesn’t race cars, but instead motorcycles. Rogers, who has been racing since the age 9 and riding longer than that, may have received the need for…

With school out for the summer and the weather forecasters predicting hotter and hazier days ahead, families can look to the Chester Recreational Association as a place to cool off and make new memories. The private, nonprofit, member-owned…

With the recent commitments from standouts at L.C. Bird and Thomas Dale high schools, it was a Meadowbrook High athlete’s turn to ascend to the next level. Brandan Delaney, a big-bodied linebacker/defensive end and offensive lineman, recently pledged to play his college football at Virginia Union University. “I picked Virginia Union because it’s close to home, not too far,” Delaney said. The 6-2, 255-pounder graduated from Meadowbrook in June and made his commitment quickly thereafter, giving him and his family two reasons to celebrate in a short period of time. Delaney started off playing defensive end for head coach Troy…

A popular saying in sports is “next man up,” and the L.C. Bird High Skyhawks have just that, another big man to help fill the hole left by Hakeem Beamon’s possible transfer. That man is 6-2, 285-pound offensive lineman DeMarkus Dancey. The rising senior picked up his second offer from Concord University in West Virginia. “When I was coaching at Virginia Union, I scoured L.C. Bird for talent,” explained current L.C. Bird coach Troy Taylor. “I went away from the game saying ‘No. 53 gets after it,’ and that No. 53 was DeMarkus.” Not only is he a good player,…
